STOP! Do you have any injuries that might prevent you from participating in aerial classes?
If you do, please- pleeeeeease- consult your doctor and/or physical therapist first. Aerial is a ton of fun, but it's also demanding on your muscles and joints. We want you to have fun going airborne, not going to the hospital.

There's no point sugar coating it: aerial hurts sometimes! Whether it's your joints fighting for their lives against the steel of an aerial hoop, or the silks pinching things that don't like to be pinched. Bruises and silk burns aren't uncommon.
The good news is, you do build up a tolerance! And in early days, if anything is so uncomfortable you can't handle it, you don't have to! There's no gold stars given for gritting your way through pain, and if something is actively painful it's a warning sign.
So you can approach every technique with the confidence that comes from having full control over how far you go- or don't. You've got time! And with practice, your nerves will get on board eventually. 😈

Getting started in aerial, or even in handstands, can present an unexpected challenge: you don't want to d1e!
Seems pretty obvious, but your survival instincts can prevent you from being able to turn upside down, or even from giving it a really solid try. Your lizard brain "knows" that turning upside down means falling, probably to your de*th out of a tree. Therefore, it's keeping you firmly on the ground.
Fortunately, we work our way from the ground up, building strength and confidence until you're able to overcome that instinct and meet the excitement waiting on the other side.

Doing aerial and/or ground classes can lead to aches, pains, bruises, burns, and a wounded ego. BUT- more students show up to class with bandages on thanks to losing fights with avocados.
And actually, aerial is great for improving your strength and flexibility, so you'll be less likely to sustain a serious injury from something as exciting as "walking across the lawn."

You can squeeze your bum, you can squeeze your friends, but you can't squeeze your friend's bum.
Real talk, there are a lot of cues in flexibility that you might not know about: where to squeeze, what to relax and when, what's a good sensation and what's a bad one. Our splits flexibility class assumes that your splits are A-shaped and that most of this info is either new or helpful to hear again.

When I see pictures and videos of people who can already Do The Thing really well, I get intimidated. I'm supposed to be that good!?
Well, no. Not at the beginning. When you first start with aerial or splits or yoga or whatever, the expectation is that you don't know sh*t. And yeah, you'll be pretty bad at it... compared to someone who's done it a long time.
But that's *normal!* That's the Way Things Work! We start out not being very good, and then through practice, we get better!
Don't let other peoples' accomplishments rob you of the chance to do something amazing for yourself.

Why tell you to point your toes if we're about fitness and enjoyment?
Aerial silks and lyra are both performance arts (whether you're interested in performing or not), so the poses are meant to *look pretty*. We promise you, if you want to take pictures and videos of yourself and share them, you'll be a lot happier with nice pointy toes.
But also, aerial expands your body awareness. You're able to keep better track of your various body parts, because in aerial you don't have a choice! Pointy toes are the icing on the cake- the indication that you've got everything else down well enough that you can focus on things that are just for show and not for not falling out of the sky.
