Fifteen years and 2 weeks ago, my mom and I wandered into a pet store just to look at the puppies. We saw a little nakey boy and immediately reminded each other of the pact we made a few years ago. We saw the ugliest dog competition on tv and fell in love with the Chinese Cresteds. We made a promise that if we ever came across one, we’d adopt them. We drove home from the pet store wondering how we could convince my dad to let us adopt him. We already had a family dog, so this wasn’t going to be easy. Two whole weeks of trying to convince my dad but he wasn’t budging. Mom and I went back to the pet store just to see if he was still there. He was, and we were told that someone was on their way to get him but we could have him if we paid then and there (this was definitely made up, but it was good enough for us). As we were checking out, my mom told me that this puppy was my 21st birthday present (which was 2 years away). I happily accepted. On our way home, with this hairless dog on my lap, we were trying to think of names. We decided that since he was a Chinese Crested, and because we are part Chinese, maybe if we named him something in Cantonese, my dad might accept him. That’s how we decided on his name, Kwai Ji, Cantonese for Bad Boy. I was grounded for 2 weeks and wasn’t allowed to go on our family vacation that summer, but it was all worth it. Happy fifteenth gotcha day anniversary, Kwai 🩵🐾

Happy Father’s Day to my dad, and to all the dads out there who fell in love with someone who already had their dog for 13+ years.
