It strikes me that after a hectic holiday season, being totally prepared for a fresh start in January with an entirely new slate of goals and intentions is a tall order. November and December are a whirlwind, New Year’s shows up with the pressure of, NEW YEAR, NEW YOU! When was I supposed to find the time and space to create the new me for 2024?

Lately I’ve come across the sentiment that January is a time for rest and dreaming. Might January be the great reset month — a soft landing place for our tired body, mind, and soul? Could this be where we truly prepare for our new year? Maybe🙏

I don’t know about you all, but my 2024 kicked off with a bit of a bang. 💥The unexpected showed up — but that’s the nature of life. Life continues to remind me that regardless of how hard I try, I cannot control or plan for everything. In times of not knowing how to proceed, I’m reminded of what my dearest teacher taught me: What am I being asked to do right now? What is being asked of me, in this moment, right here, right now? That’s the dharma, and that’s what I try to remember in moments of overwhelm — what is being asked of me right now? 💛

Check my website (link in bio) for regular studio classes, donation classes, and book club this month. And if you can’t make it to an in-person class, subscribe to my YouTube channel for lots of free practices.

Honolulu today was my fifth marathon finish. I’m not gonna lie, this race kicked my butt like no other race has. I had a goal and did not get there — there were too many obstacles in the way today. But I’m reminded of what I discovered in the course of my very first marathon back in 2012, and that’s this—you live any entire lifetime on the marathon course. To live, to run is to know great triumph and defeat. It is to know joy and despair, strength and pain. It is to feel brilliant inspiration and utter loss of hope. In other words, the marathon hands you all the richness of existence in the quest for the epic 26.2. What I discovered on my first marathon is that despite the struggle, there’s no where else I feel quite so alive or awake. So here’s to being alive and awake to the privilege of being alive and free. Make it count 🏃🏼‍♀️💪💖🙏

Side note, while I was having my butt kicked and praying to Durga for her fierceness and Hanuman for his courage and Ganesha to remove the obstacles, there were some signs out on the course that really helped—“On a Scale from 1 to 10, you’re a 26.2” and “All finishers get leid” —thank you for those bright spots that made me laugh. And of course, the one who’s always waiting for me at the finish line, the one who believes me in more than I believe in myself, thank you bill_brundage for all the support, love, and belief. ❤️🙏

In a culture that encourages us to do more, consume more, buy more, spend more at every turn; could we instead do less this holiday season? Perhaps there joy and space to be found in slowing down; in using the long, dark nights for reflection and renewal. 🕯️

In the spirit of slowing down and offering pause, I’m excited to offer a new class this month — Flow & Restore. The best of both worlds, this class is 2/3 vinyasa and 1/3 restorative. We’ll begin with dynamic movement that challenges the body and moves the energy; then luxuriate in a lengthy wind down with long, nourishing holds followed by an unrushed savasana.

Three chances in December to take this with me 🌞

“The more we quiet all that is around us, the more we can receive what waits within.” -

The asana is just a portal — merely one of the eight limbs of yoga, a step toward the innermost self. We get really distracted with making the shapes and perfecting the body and its abilities. But it turns out that regardless of whether we “succeed” or fall out of the pose, the question is whether we can use that experience to get closer to self-knowledge. Can we use the practice in all its forms to turn away from the outer distractions and toward the true self? Can we eventually sit in stillness and quiet long enough to experience the self as true and whole? Let’s not lose sight of that — who’s with me? 💖

Two special chances to practice with me coming up:
✨Black Friday, Nov 24, 8:30am at with food drive to benefit
✨Sunday, Dec 3, 9:00am at lululemon Colonial Williamsburg

Happy all the holidays and hope to see you on the mat🙏✨💗

“Slowing down is the same thing as waking up.” - Judith Hanson Lasater

We live in a world that prizes productivity, efficiency, speed, and busy-ness. As a result, most of us live hectic lives as we juggle a variety of demands everyday. Layer on the upcoming holiday season that will ask even more of our time, energy, and attention and we have the perfect recipe for overwhelm and burnout.

In the constant rush, we miss so much. In a slower, more deliberate approach, we are better able to find presence here and now. We can practice this on the mat and meditation cushion and learn how to bring it to every moment.

Join me for a slowing down this Sunday, November 5 at from 9:00-11:00am. Staying Grounded Through the Holidays is a workshop designed to help you find peace, presence, and equilibrium through the most hectic time of year.

What to expect:
✨Flow & Restore Practice: we’ll begin with a fluid, dynamic vinyasa practice and end with restorative holds.
✨Meditation: a guided meditation will lead you to even greater release and relaxation.
✨Self-Reflection & Discussion: we’ll explore how yoga philosophy can help us reframe the modern holiday season. Diving specifically into the Yamas (ethics) for self-inquiry, we’ll discuss ways to navigate the holidays, manage stress, and find meaning this time of year.

Register through Body Balance website, investment is $45/per person. All attendees receive a free gift from lululemon! Come prepared with a mat, journal, and pen. Space is limited! DM me with any questions🙏

It’s times like these when it seems tone deaf to promote oneself or events. It seems trite to say that yoga is the answer. Here’s what I know — yoga alone cannot heal the world or the challenges we collectively face, but; it is a place to start.

In most basic terms, coming to the practice through asana or meditation is a place to better know oneself, ground ourselves, and emerge perhaps a bit more centered, heartful, and clear in our intentions. So my hope is that we all keep practicing in a way that leads us to a more grounded, compassionate, and connected state of being.

Find me in my regularly scheduled classes and the following events:

✨Sunday, Oct 29 — Yoga at lululemon Colonial Williamsburg from 9:00-10:00am. Free to attend & fun stuff will be given away. Get there early to get a spot.

✨Sunday, November 5 — Staying Grounded Through the Holidays workshop from 9:00-11:00am. Designed to help you find peace, rest, and equilibrium through the most hectic time of year — expect a Flow & Restore practice + meditation + philosophy, self-reflection, and discussion. $45/person, register through Body Balance schedule.

Let me know how I can support your practice🙏💖✨

Workshop alert! 💚Last workshop with me this year is on Sunday, November 5 from 9:00-11:00am. Staying Grounded Through the Holidays is a workshop designed to help you find peace, rest, and equilibrium through the most hectic time of year. Asana, breath practice, meditation, and self-inquiry through yoga philosophy can all support a peaceful and stress-free holiday season.

💚What to expect:
✨Flow & Restore Practice: we’ll begin with a fluid, dynamic vinyasa practice designed to ground us in our bodies and end with restorative holds to downshift and soothe the nervous system.
✨Meditation: a guided meditation will lead you to lighten your burdens and focus on what brings you true joy.
✨Self-Reflection & Discussion: using Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, we’ll explore how yoga philosophy can help us reframe the modern holiday season. Diving specifically into the Yamas (ethics) for self-inquiry, we’ll discuss ways to navigate the holidays, manage stress, and find meaning this time of year.

I've been told in the past that yoga teachers shouldn't talk about current events in class, that people come to yoga to "escape." I've thought a lot about this over my years as a teacher, but more importantly, as a student of yoga. My thoughts are--if we want to escape life, there are endless options -- shopping, binge watching, scrolling, numbing out, eating, drinking, substances, etc. And I think we come to yoga not to escape life but in search of a better way to navigate life. As a student, I am drawn to teachers who give me guidance, clarity, and tools to traverse turbulent waters -- and who don't shy away from tough topics.

The truth is, we come to the practice to WAKE up to life, to peel back the veils of illusion. When we awaken, the practice helps us see ourselves and life clearly, with discernment and compassion. And from there, to take action that is in alignment with the truth and our dharma.

We are clearly living through terrifying times, and the last thing the world needs is any of us "escaping" or turning away. What the world needs is our awakening to the suffering of many sentient beings, the loss of rights, the destruction of our planet. Your suffering is my suffering. We all face love and loss, hurt and healing … and as students and teachers of the practice; we face it together. May we find a collective way forward that includes peace and harmony for all beings everywhere.

✨The idea of surrendering to life is a tough one. Those of us who resist surrender don't usually make peace with the idea until life insists, until we have no other choice. Ishvara pranidhana -- the fifth & final niyama of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras -- asks that we incorporate this idea of surrendering to a higher source/deity as part of our regular practice.

✨Life lately has been insisting that I take this concept of surrender more seriously than I'd like. My type-A, achiever mind is not at all comfortable with relinquishing control, organization, plans, and contingency plans. Travel, flights, circumstances, expectations, plans -- one after another, I can see how I'm being asked to allow more than shape.

✨A beautiful thing about Ishvara pranidhana is its ability to shift us from ego to grace. In doing so, we can find relief -- perhaps we're not even meant to control it all and sometimes loosening the grip allows for even better and greater things. with a looser grip, seeming misfortunes can be revealed as blessings, problems turn into portals for greater insight and understanding. 💖

"As your spiritual practices start to work, your reasons for being with people start to change, and who you want to be with changes too." - Ram Dass

Connection. Discernment. Clarity. These themes emerged from a week in the woods at the beloved Feathered Pipe Ranch in Montana. For years I've known that I find my tribe in the world of yoga--fellow students, fellow teachers, fellow seekers. This only becomes more clear the longer I walk this path--learning, stumbling, losing my way, and finding my way back again. Much love to all my fellow seekers--thank you for holding space, for witnessing, for lighting the way, for reflecting truth. It's all of you who keep me coming back, again and again. 💖✨🙏🪶

Experiment: what happens if we arrive in the present moment as if there were no past and no future — only now? As if there were no "over there" — only here?

The practice is an invitation to ground ourselves in the present -- to work with what is in front of us and within us, right here and now. The mind resists this, always. The mind is a storyteller, it wants to spin tales about the past and orchestrate the future. It takes tapas (discipline) to show up again and again, to begin again and again, to return to the present again and again.

Through abhyasa (consistent practice) and vairagya (detachment) we slowly realize the impact of the practice, the lessening of our burdens. Through self-knowledge we begin to surrender the weight of misunderstanding and misidentification of the self. Through greater self-knowledge we get closer and closer to the promise of yoga -- freedom.

"The only impossible journey is the one you never begin." -Tony Robbins

✨There are so many journeys we will take -- literal journeys, metaphorical journeys, lifelong journeys. Patanjali's Yoga Sutras teaches us that yoga is an involution, a turning inward so that we might better understand the self and find liberation through self-knowledge.

✨The journey inward doesn't require that we go anywhere. There's a Zen saying -- the only enlightenment you find at the top of a mountain is the enlightenment you bring with you. Everywhere we go, there we are.

✨I'm not saying don't travel -- rather that we shouldn't expect to discover anything in the Himalayas that we can't discover where we are right now doing the work that's being asked of us. Instead of searching to see something, let's see what's in front of us -- right here, right now. And in this way, we're invited to take the journey inward to greater self understanding and live our dharma to the benefit of all beings. Wishing you the courage, inspiration, and fortitude to take that journey; remembering that we walk the path together. 💛
