🩺 PA-C & CPT 🎬 YouTube: coachmaryskating Hi! I'm Coach Mary. Be sure to follow along!

I am a figure skating and power skating coach, former professional figure skater, and certified personal trainer. I have been on the ice for 20 years - teaching, training, show skating, hockey, or just for fun! My mission is to reach the skating community worldwide and skate toward our goals together, both on and off the ice, in an accessible, supportive, and positive environment. Thank you everyone for your support. :)

Adult Figure Skaters ✨ You didn’t lose your flexibility overnight!

It’s the accumulation of desk jobs, long commutes, injuries, and hours sitting that quietly tightens your joints and muscles. Stiff backs, hips, ankles … sound familiar?

The good news: flexibility and mobility responds to input at any age. You just need consistent movement ✨

Try 1 minute each of these mobility exercises! 5 minutes to less stiffness 😅 Comment “MOBILITY” for more of my 10 minutes or less routines.
✅ Shoulder dislocates
✅ Adductor stretch with thread the needle
✅ 90/90 with thruster
✅ Forward reach with arm swoop
✅ Hip flexor lift

Adult beginner figure skaters ✨ You belong here.

Everyone is allowed to be new at something. And honestly? You’re brave for showing up. You have work. Responsibilities. A whole life outside this rink. And you still chose to lace up and try something new.

Everyone is new at something. No one is new forever.
Every skater was once a beginner too.

Give yourself permission to learn. To fall. And to share the ice.

I’m proud of you 🫶 Coach Mary

Hi Figure Skaters! ✨ Off-ice training FAQ featuring the questions I get asked the most.

If you’re an adult figure skater wondering whether off-ice is worth it, if it’s too late, or where to even start, read this.

Comment “101” to grab your beginner-friendly off-ice training plan. 🤗

Figure Skater Chit Chat 💬 “How often should figure skaters do off-ice training?”

I get this question ALL the time as a coach, so let’s settle it.

I recommend at least 2-4 days per week in addition to your on-ice sessions if you want to progress to your highest potential on the ice.

Had a hard skate session? That’s a good day to pair with a stretch session.

Feeling tired or off? That’s a recovery day, perfect for an easy walk, yoga, or a quick core/mobility flow. 10 minutes still gets you closer to your goals.

For strength: 💪 Aim to train major muscle groups (glutes, quads, hamstrings, back, etc) 2-3 days per week, resting at least 2 days between sessions hitting the same muscle group and plyometric days.

Hope this helps! Drop any off-ice training questions below. 🫶 Coach Mary

Hi Skater Friends 👋 Here’s my first workout 6 weeks post hip surgery 🎉

I lost a lot of blood during surgery and felt really fatigued up until this week. It felt like slowing down and resting was the right thing to do. Prioritizing my energy to move safely on crutches and nurse a baby without putting weight on my hips. I couldn’t even think about lifting a dumbbell until yesterday. It’s absolutely okay to rest when injured.

I’m still on crutches and can’t move this box alone so we’re working out next to the toys lol. It doesn’t have to look pretty, be proud of showing up. I’m modifying this circuit by lowering my weights and doing just 2 sets.

My #1 goal is being able to carry my kids while walking ASAP. Luckily my skater workouts are functional. Training in several directions and planes. Just like how we may have to catch an unexpected fall, pick up kids, and rotate while we multitask.

Doing these sitting until I’m cleared to be 100% weightbearing. To progress, do this in positions that challenge stability such as half-kneeling, bridge, lunge, etc.

3-4 sets, 10 reps, 60 second rest
✅ Shoulder Press
✅ Face Pull
✅ Lateral Raise
✅ Bicep Curl to Wide Curl
✅ OH Tricep Extension

It felt sooo good to move and excited to share more of my workouts to regain my strength and mobility. My hip is still broken, so I want to share how you can still safely move and modify to what your body tells you. (Side note, cleared by my doctor to do these things most importantly).

Thanks for joining me on my return to the rink journey! 🫶 Coach Mary
