January Health Challenge #3

So you started weighing/measuring your food to learn what a serving size is. Now, how many servings do you need each day? You may be surprised how much you can eat!

This varies on your current weight, weight goals, and how active you are. For example, a women who currently weights between 151-175 pounds, who works out 3-6 times a week, and wants to loss weight, is allowed the following servings per food group:

GRAINS: 10
FRUIT/VEGETABLES: 7
DAIRY: 3
PROTEIN: 2 (4 oz. each serving if doing weight training)
FAT: 6
FUN: 2

Note: If you are not use to eating a lot of grains and fruit/vegetables, it is important that you drink plenty of water, and to add a serving every couple of days to what you normally eat until you reach your amount. Otherwise, you will experience stomach bloating and pain as the body is not use to processing this amount.

January Health Challenge #2

How many of you grew up hearing, "Clean off your plate." or "There are starving children out there." Add to this that restaurants are either asking you if you want to "supersize" it, or your plate of pasta could serve 4! So what is a serving size? Here are a few examples.

GRAINS: 1/2 bagel, 1 slice bread, 1/3 c. cooked rice, 1 oz. dry cereal, 1/2 c. pasta, 1 oz. pretzels, 3 c. popcorn
DAIRY: 1 c. milk, 1 oz. cheese, 1/2 c. cottage cheese. 1 c. yogurt
PROTEIN: 3 oz. cooked, 3 eggs, 1 c. legumes
FRUIT/VEGETABLES: 1/2 c. fruit juice, 1 c. fresh fruit or vegetable, small whole fruit, 1/2 c. vegetable sauce
FAT; 1 tsp. oil/mayo/butter, 1 tblsp. salad dressing, 1/8 avocado, 2 tblsp. coffee creamer, 1 tblsp. cream cheese
FUN: 8 oz. beer, 5 oz. wine, 2 tblsp. sugar, 6 oz. soda, 1/3 c. ice cream, 1/2 candy bar, 1 2" cookie

Your challenge is to weigh and measure your food intake and write down everything you eat (even the mayo or butter you spread on the bread). Next week you will learn how many servings of each food group you should have.

January Health Challenge #1

Small changes can add up to big results! Your first challenge this month is to take stock of your liquid diet.

Drink those fancy Starbucks coffee? Start cutting back on the sugar and heavy creams every few days with the goal to drink it black. Drink more than one cup a day? Replace one cup with green tea.

Drink soda? Replace one soda with water until you no longer have soda in your diet. Miss the bubbles? Drink sparkling water and add lemon for flavor - and health benefits.

Start your day with 16 ounces of water! Did you know that 60% of your body is made of water and that 90% of your blood is water? The benefits of drinking at least 60 ounces of water a day ranges from lubricating joints to helping maintain blood pressure. It's that time of year again where we feel we can start over, start fresh, and start strong! 👊 The most common New Year resolutions are to eat healthy and be more active. We are here to help!

Every Tuesday, we will post a challenge regarding eating healthier. It might be giving up one soft drink a day; read labels on your food before purchasing; cut back on your sugar; or incorporate more whole foods.

This will set you up for our popular February Challenge to attend more classes. By March, we will have established healthier habits!
