February Fitness Challenge - Your Body

The quadriceps femoris is a group of muscles located in the front of the thigh. There are four muscle groups that make up the quads:

✅ Vastus intermedius
✅ Vastus medialis
✅ Vastus lateralis
✅ Rectus femoris

What do they do? They’re responsible for helping us stand up, walk, jog, and climb stairs. They help track your knee, keeping in lined up probably. Next time you plié in class, pay extra attention to those quads and the muscle behind the move! Use muscle vs. joint action.

February Fitness Challenge - Your Body

Your “booty” is made up of three major muscle groups and their jobs include posture, performance, and movement. And together they make the glutes!

• gluteus maximus
• gluteus medius
• gluteus minimus

The gluteus maximus is the largest muscle in your body. Its primary function is movement of the hip and thigh, such as climbing stairs, standing from a sitted position, pliés, jogging, and knee lifts. It plays a big role in abductions and hip extensions.

The gluteus medius and minimus have similar functions, such as abductions, and to enable a steady gait. The medius maintains side to side stability of the pelvis, such as hip shakes and lunging. and of the leg for jogging. The minimus works with the medius to help to stabilize the hips and pelvis while walking, jogging, or standing on one leg, as well as providing internal and external rotation at the hip joint.

January Health Challenge #4

Americans typically consume 77 grams of sugar a day. That's 60 pounds of sugar a year! The American Heart Association recommends that the maximum daily intake should be 25 grams or 6 teaspoons.

A high intake of sugar can cause such health issues as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and chronic inflammation.

Besides the obvious baked goods and candy, the biggest culprit of added sugar can be found in beverages - soda, fruit drinks, energy drinks, coffe/tea. If you took on our "liquid diet" challenge earlier this month, you are well on your way to cutting back on your daily sugar intake.

This week's challenge is to start reading labels to educate yourself on hidden sugars, and to find ways to cut back on your daily intake. Any ingredient that has "ose" in it is sugar. Also look for corn syrup, honey, apple/grape juice concentrate. Go look in your pantry and share below a food item you typically consume that has sugar in it that surprised you. Mine was peanut butter - it has molasses in it!

January Health Challenge #3

So you started weighing/measuring your food to learn what a serving size is. Now, how many servings do you need each day? You may be surprised how much you can eat!

This varies on your current weight, weight goals, and how active you are. For example, a women who currently weights between 151-175 pounds, who works out 3-6 times a week, and wants to loss weight, is allowed the following servings per food group:

GRAINS: 10
FRUIT/VEGETABLES: 7
DAIRY: 3
PROTEIN: 2 (4 oz. each serving if doing weight training)
FAT: 6
FUN: 2

Note: If you are not use to eating a lot of grains and fruit/vegetables, it is important that you drink plenty of water, and to add a serving every couple of days to what you normally eat until you reach your amount. Otherwise, you will experience stomach bloating and pain as the body is not use to processing this amount.
