Operating as usual

[03/15/21]   Congratulations to your new CBW President Mr. Matt Cottrill. Matt has been an important part of the board and has dedicated a lot of personal time to coordinate events and maintain most of the administrative roles and responsibilities. He has even worked diligently to ensure that we maintain a consistent practice schedule even during COVID protocols and restrictions. I have all the confidence in Matt to lead our organization, continue our mission and grow CBW even more helping Veterans and their families in need. Godspeed Matt!

It has been an honor and a privilege serving you all as President over these last few years. There have been many challenges and many stressful situations that I believe we overcame and made CBW even better than it was before. We were mission focused, we helped each other throughout this COVID pandemic even when things got really tough. It shows how great you all are and the great things you have done. I look forward to the future and what other great things we can accomplish.

I also look forward to continuing to lead on the ice as Team Captain and in any other way this organization needs me. Being a part of this family has helped me tremendously physically and mentally. I want to thank each and everyone of you for your support and your friendship. It is you who motivates me to be better and I hope I have done the same for you.

For the future and as COVID restrictions relax we plan to start participating in events, local and out-of-state, as soon as this summer. We are also looking at scheduling more local scrimmages against DC Warriors, USA Warriors, Capitol Police, Congressional team and more. Please continue to check our schedule via TeamSnap or our webpage,, for more information. We will try to distribute information out ASAP!

Thank you all again for your support and dedication!

Chris Brown

Help with Medical Expenses for Dwayne Woodard, organized by Lori Jones

Please help the Bowie Hockey Club raise money for Mr. Dwayne Woodward’s medical expenses.

In 2018, Dwayne Woodard registered his Deaf 4 year old son, Keivonn for Bowie Hockey Club's Instructional/Future Bowie Bruin/Learn to Play Hockey program and was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer, Multiple Myeloma. Multiple Myeloma affects the plasma cells in bone marrow causing them to form a tumor.

After recovering from chemotherapy treatments from November 2019-March 2020, Dwayne's cancer aggressively returned and he suffered rib and back fractures along with a torn artery in his heart and kidney failure.

Today, Dwayne is in coma at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda fighting for his life. Keivonn turned 8 last week and this morning played a hockey game in Easton with his Bowie Bruins mite team.

Please consider donating to help Dwayne's wife, April and children, Akeisha and Keivonn cover the cost of his medical expenses.

[01/30/21]   From USA Hockey Disabled Hockey Section...

Good Morning,

We are saddened to announce the cancellation of the 16th annual Toyota | USA Hockey Disabled Hockey Festival, which was set to take place April 8-11, 2021, and April 15-18, 2021, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In its place, we will host a week-long virtual event, April 12-17. More information on the Toyota | USA Hockey Virtual Disabled Hockey Festival, including a full schedule of events, will be available at a later date.

The decision to cancel the 2021 Toyota | USA Hockey Disabled Hockey Festival was made with an abundance of caution to protect our more vulnerable populations and ensure the safety of all participants, staff and volunteers during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

There were many factors that went into this decision. We hope that by sharing these factors and the thought process behind this decision, it will help everyone understand.

We had a deadline of January 15th with the rinks in Pittsburgh to decide to move forward with the event or cancel. Once we passed this date, we would not be eligible to receive our ice deposits back. This bill totaled almost $200,000.
Our Disabled Hockey programs overall are at a higher risk with the COVID-19 pandemic. We understand this is not true for every single one of our athletes, coaches, volunteers or families, but it is for enough of our participants to need to take extra precautions.
We consulted with Dr. Stuart from the Mayo Clinic, USA Hockey’s Chief Medical and Safety Officer, and Kevin Margarucci, Manager of Player Safety at USA Hockey. We discussed many things such as the likely status of COVID-19 around the country come April and the effects of the vaccine being distributed. As well as, the increased risk of our Disabled Hockey community, the increased risks of bringing together a high volume of people from all over the country indoors and the possibility of an outbreak given these factors.
We discussed the ability to meet local and state requirements and guidelines while holding this event and any additional costs/resources this would require.
Lastly, the Disabled Hockey Festival is unique in many ways. It differs from other USAH National events in geographic diversity, size, participants and the personalized interactions throughout the event.

USA Hockey intends to stage the 2022 Toyota | USA Hockey Disabled Festival in Pittsburgh from April 7-10, 2022 (blind, deaf, special, standing amputee & warrior) and April 21-24, 2022 (sled). The 2023 event will be hosted in St. Louis, Missouri.

Every registrant will be issued a full refund, whether you registered for the original 2020 or 2021 event. All participants will start the registration process from the beginning for the 2022 Disabled Hockey Festival, as it is a new event. You will be contacted to verify your refund information in the coming week. It is imperative you respond in a timely manner to confirm your information. We request all teams also confirm when their refund check has been received to assist in our tracking.

We are excited to host a week-long Virtual Disabled Hockey Festival April 12-17 to celebrate our six disciplines. This will include opportunities for individual and team participation, challenges, giveaways and more. Additional information, including a full schedule of events, will be available in the near future.

We are disappointed we won’t be able to gather together in Pittsburgh this spring, but look forward to seeing you all at our Classics in the fall and at the Disabled Hockey Festival in 2022.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out.

[11/21/20]   Just a friendly reminder to all CBW players who have been out of the DMV area recently (hockey, work or personal travel, etc.) please refrain from participating in any CBW functions, including practice, for 14 days or can show proof of a negative COVID test. Please understand during these times we want to ensure we can continue to get out on the ice, have some fun but do it in a responsible manner that doesn’t risk player safety.
We will re-evaluate the current COVID guidelines during our next Board meeting and will determine if the guidance provided should be continued or can relaxed.

Thank you all for understanding and bearing with us during this time!
