This week, I get to do something truly special.

I’m sending out the first Certified Successful Chef™ credentials to the incredible chefs who completed our inaugural Leadership Bootcamp.

Congratulations: Chefs Cody Maxwell, Brynne Thomas, Hertz, Michael St. Germain, Nicholas Brown, Everett Morris and Toni Charmello

These aren’t just certificates; they’re a testament to the courage, self-reflection, and growth these chefs showed every single week.

They didn’t just study leadership; they embodied it.

Every one of them made a conscious choice to take back their agency, embrace the power of their decisions, and lead from their heart.

They’re the proof that transformation in this industry is not only possible, it’s happening right now.

And soon, you’ll start seeing them wearing their new Certified Successful Chef patches on their jackets at conferences and events.

When someone asks, “What’s that?”, they’ll answer:

“It means I did the work.”

I couldn’t be more proud or grateful for this first group of pioneers.

Together, we’re building a movement that will reshape what leadership in the kitchen looks like.

When we first started working together, this Culinary Director was in survival mode.

He was the one closing every night. Writing every schedule. Approving every decision.

And quietly burning out in the process.

His team meant well—but they weren’t stepping up.

Why would they? He hadn’t built the trust or systems that empowered them to lead.

We started small:

✅ Delegated with structure and follow-up
✅ Created a leadership development path for his junior managers
✅ Put in weekly alignment meetings so communication wasn’t reactive anymore

And the shift? It was massive.

Within 90 days, he was no longer the bottleneck. His team was solving problems, making decisions, and keeping things running.

The biggest win? He took his first full weekend off in three years—and service never skipped a beat.

That’s what leadership systems do.

If you’re tired of carrying it all on your back, there’s another way.

What’s One Thing You Wish Someone Had Told You Before Stepping Into Leadership?

When I took my first leadership role, I thought I had to have all the answers.

Turns out, leadership is more about asking the right questions.

I wish someone had told me:

👉 It’s okay to not know everything.
👉 The goal is to make others better—not be the best at everything.
👉 Listening matters more than speaking.

So I’m curious: What do you wish someone had told you before your first leadership role?

Drop it below—your answer might be exactly what another leader needs to hear.

Today I had the chance to visit Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, A-B Tech CUL 135 class in Asheville to talk about something close to my heart:

👉 How knowing your core values helps you make better career choices.

We talked about:

• Doing the inner work to know what really matters
• Asking 5 people how you actually show up
• Connecting the dots between values + leadership

I told the students:

“Your skills will open doors. But your values will decide if you actually want to walk through them.”

Huge thanks to the students and faculty who showed up with curiosity, courage, and great questions.

🔥 The Myth of the “Natural Leader” in the Kitchen

There’s a belief that some chefs are just “natural leaders.”

Confident. Charismatic. Commanding respect the second they walk into a room.

But here’s the truth: Leadership isn’t a personality trait—it’s a practiced skill.

The best leaders I’ve coached weren’t born with it. They learned it.

✅ They made mistakes—and learned from them.
✅ They invested in their own growth.
✅ They practiced, reflected, adjusted, and improved.

If you’re a chef or F&B leader who struggles with confidence or consistency, you’re not broken—you’re just in process.

Leadership isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being committed to growth.
