Holsters are a tool of firearm safety. I recommend all handguns that are carried be in holster that covers the trigger guard and trigger.
Reports say the person in this story was carrying an upholstered gun in his pocket and that the gun "goes off" after falling from his pocket. He violated proper safety protocols.
Most modern handguns have safety features designed to prevent them from "going off" if they fall and hit the ground. I don't know what gun he was carrying and at what point it went off.
It could have gone off prior to hitting to floor if he tried to catch it but mistakenly pull the trigger in the process. Or in a rare case, it could have his the floor and "went off" if the gun is not "drop safe" like most modern pistols and revolvers.
Either way, a proper holster would prevent discharge in the first case scenario. Being aware of and carrying based on the presence or lack of safely features on your gun could help prevent it in the other scenario.

I pulled this from my camera roll archives from this past summer.
This was my first 22 caliber bowling pin event. It's good to look back to see your mistakes and correct them as you go.
It's even better to have enough training and experience to know what mistakes you made to correct them.

I had a great time teaching my FREE Firearm Safety class at an HOA's Community Block Party yesterday.
It was the last day of the 2025 pool season and the last day of several homeowners being unaware of safe practices concerning fi****ms.
We gave gun safety instruction; answered great questions; issued gun cable locks that were donated by Bass Reeves Gun Club, NAAGA Atlanta Chapter; and offered free swag and literature on concealed carry and home defense.

SAFETY ALERT !!! Sig Sauer P320/M17/M18 pistols.
If you or anyone you know own any version of the Sig Sauer P320 pistol, including the military M17 & M18 models, here is a resource to check the pistol for Sig's attempts to make it safer.
Many firearm instructors, competition shooting organizations, law enforcement agencies, and ranges have banned the used of this pistol. A unit of the Air Force has done the same recently. All bans are because of years of reports of the pistol firing a round without the use of the trigger. Sig upgraded the initial design for the same reason.
Regardless of whether a P320/M17/M18 pistol has the upgrade, most of the bans by the above instructors and organizations remain in place.
Still, if you own one of these fi****ms, it's best to make sure you have verified with the info in the link, that your pistol has the safest upgrade.
Always follow all firearm safety rules with every firearm.
P320 Voluntary Upgrade Program | SIG SAUER The P320® Voluntary Upgrade Program is a SIG SAUER initiative to upgrade P320 pistols at no additional cost.

Why it's important to know the ammunition caliber your firearm is chambered and designed to handle.
They look the same. So why can’t you shoot both?
5.56 NATO and .223 Re*****on are nearly identical — but there’s a key difference
5.56 is loaded to higher pressure and usually fired from barrels with a longer throat (leade)
If your rifle is chambered in 5.56, you’re good to run both
But if it’s marked .223 only, stick to .223 — firing 5.56 could create unsafe pressure
Always check the barrel.
Just because it fits doesn’t mean it’s safe
