I was 28 weeks pregnant when Alexia arrived.
That is not the beginning of a triumphant story. That is the beginning of the longest night of my life.
What I remember most is not the machines. It is the other parents. You get to know people in a NICU. You don’t mean to. You’re all just there — waiting, watching, praying in the particular way people pray when they have no other moves left.
I held my breath for her babies because I was too frightened to hold it for my own.
The full piece — including what that night taught me about every room I’ve entered since — is on Substack. Link in the first comment.

My mom brought home a piece of paper.
I was 18. Fresh out of high school. Hated my first year of college. Wasn’t sure what I was doing or where I was going.

She had been in nursing for years. She saw a job opening at the hospital — unit secretary — and thought I could do it. So she brought home a list of medical vocabulary and told me to study it.

I studied it. I passed the interview. I got the job.
And I never stopped doing that exact move.
👉🏽From unit secretary — I learned cardiac telemetry. Became an EKG tech.
👉🏽From EKG tech — I learned perfusion. Became a perfusion technician at Baxter Healthcare.
👉🏽From clinical work — I learned how people learn. Became a trainer, then an instructional designer.
👉🏽From instructional design — I talked my way into consulting. Before “transferable skills” was even a phrase.
Twenty years later: Deloitte. KPMG. Accenture — twice.

Every room I was never supposed to be in. Entered.
Mastered.
Leveraged into the next one.
That move has a name.
I call it The Vocabulary Play.

And I’ve spent 20 years watching other brilliant, non-linear people get passed over because nobody taught them how to run it.
That’s what Career Nomad is. That’s what I’m building.

If your resume doesn’t make sense on paper but you’ve done everything — this is for you.

The most underestimated professional in today’s workforce?

A Black woman who has stopped waiting to be discovered —and started building her own distribution.

She’s not asking for a seat at the table.
She’s using AI to build the table, book herself on the stage and send the invoice before they realize what happened.

We weren’t kept out because we weren’t qualified.

We were kept out because qualified was never really the requirement.

But here’s what changes now:

👉🏾When your output speaks before you walk in the room —
👉🏾When your visibility can’t be managed by someone else’s comfort level —
👉🏾When AI gives you the leverage that access used to gatekeep —

The game shifts.

Not because they finally let us in.
Because we stopped needing permission to play.

We were never the missing piece.
We were always the missing ingredient.

Atlanta. 124 surveillance cameras per 1,000 residents. More than almost any city on Earth — outside a handful in China..60,000+ cameras. AI robots patrolling parking lots. Systems designed to generate suspicion before a crime happens. And the first testing ground? A majority-Black neighborhood. This is what “AI is neutral” actually looks like in practice. I don't ask if this is this fair.
I ask: who is now carrying the downside?
Because the people without a seat at the Al decision table don’t just miss the opportunity.
They become the subject of the decision.
Atlanta is the case study.
Your city is next.
Visibility is not vanity.
It is economic defense.

Quick one—I’m opening a private Decision Room™ May 7 EST on how AI is changing how high performers are evaluated.

Thought of you immediately.

It’s called AI Didn’t Replace You. It Exposed You.

Not a webinar—this is where I break down why strong people are being misread and how to fix it in real time.

Want me to send you the link?

HR is not being ignored.
It’s being under-leveraged.

And in an AI-driven market?

That’s a risk.

I’ll be at SOAHR 2026 TODAY speaking on:

The HR Leader Playbook for AI & Human-Centered Transformation

But let me be direct about what this session is really about:

Most HR leaders are doing the work…

…but they’re not controlling how that work is being interpreted.

Same effort.
Same impact.
Different perception.

That’s the gap.

Not performance.

Positioning.

AI is accelerating this problem.

Because when automation removes the busywork, what’s left is:

→ Judgment
→ Influence
→ Decision-making

And if HR isn’t positioned there?

You get bypassed.

In this session, we’re not talking theory.

We’re breaking down how to:

✔ Translate HR work into business-critical language
✔ Use AI to drive decisions—not just insights
✔ Build Decision Presence™ in rooms that matter
✔ Apply Proof → Positioning → Pay in real time

Because HR isn’t just a function.

It’s a decision system.

And if your value isn’t clear in 30 seconds?

You’re already being misread.

📍 SOAHR 2026

The HR Leader Playbook for Al & Human-Centered Transformation
Thu Apr 23 12:45 PM - 1:45 PM
Salon 4 Gas South District (formerly Infinite Energy Center)

Come ready to rethink how your organization actually runs.

03/30/2026

You’re not being overlooked.
You’re being misread.

Most high performers think the problem is:
• visibility
• timing
• the market

It’s not.

The problem is your signal.

How you’re interpreted
How your experience is translated
How decision-makers read your value

And AI?

It’s exposing that gap faster than ever.

Because now:
👉 interpretation > effort
👉 positioning > experience

So if your signal is off…

You don’t just get ignored.

You get:
• discounted
• passed over
• miscategorized

Misread signal = missed opportunity.
