Time to get your fall/winter cover crop in the ground! Cover crops are an essential part of organic gardening and acts as a free fertilizer for your following crops! Your soil health is one of the most valuable resources on your farm or in your garden. After Summer harvest it's important to add nutrients and organic matter back in your soil, and the best way to accomplish this is with a fall/winter cover crop mix(green manure). For best results, it's important that your mix contains cereal grains, legumes, and leafy greens. Benefits include; protect against soil erosion, improving tilth, feeds beneficial microbes, attracts beneficial insects and pollinators, adds organic matter to soil, adds nitrogen fixing bacteria, improves nutrient uptake, breaks up pest cycles, and smothers weeds. Cover crops are extremely important to improving long term soil stewardship.
