Howard Thurman was MLK’s spiritual mentor, an unsung hero of the Civil Rights movement, and a mystic.

I hadn’t heard of him till I recently watched the “Backs Against the Wall” documentary with . I recommend watching it and you can find the full film online free.

I think more people should know about Thurman.

Howard Thurman met Mahatma Ghandi in India in 1935 which indirectly influenced the peaceful struggle for freedom King led.

King attended Thurman’s sermons and carried his book “Jesus and the Disinherited” in his pocket during the Montgomery bus boycott.

His best friend was an oak tree. He was disciplined in spending time in silence, meditation, and prayer. He saw spiritual development as a necessary component of social activism.
