GT Off-Road is a student organization. As a team, our goal is to design, engineer, build, test, and race a vehicle in the Baja SAE competition.
We, as GT Off-Road, design, engineer, and build an off-road vehicle from scratch. For our competitions, we travel around the country to test our designs against over 200 colleges from around the world. The cars are judged based on design report and analysis, cost, acceleration, braking, hill climb, tractor pull, mud bog, rock crawling, and a 4 hour endurance race. Points earned in each of these ev
ents are totaled up to determine the final rankings. We are a completely student run organization with faculty advisers at Georgia Tech. The student members are responsible for 100% of the design and fabrication of the car. Members get to see their designs advance through design and fabrication and eventually see them in competition with other teams' designs. Manufacturing team members are trained in all of the machining skills they will need to fabricate the parts of the car, so no experience with either cars or machining is necessary to join the team. Likewise, design team members are trained in all necessary skills and knowledge to complete their task such as CAD, the design process, engineering analysis methods, and knowledge of the particular subsystem they are working in. There are a few standards that all teams must follow. The most important of these are the strict safety standards set by SAE. Also, all teams are given identical Briggs & Straton 10hp motors that they must use. Aside from that, teams have the freedom to design the car however they want. We are located in the GT Student Competition Center. If you do not have transportation, you can reach the shop by taking the green route from Georgia Tech. Please contact us, by email, if you are interested in joining our team and have any questions, or you can submit an interest form on our website (http://www.gtor.gatech.edu/#/mainpage)!

Last week, we wrapped up our first competition of the year at Tennessee Tech coming in 7th place overall!
If it wasn't for the dedication from our team members or the support from our organization's sponsors and the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, none of this would have been possible. To each and every person that helped push us to where we are today, thank you!
Next stop, Rochester!

Member Spotlight!
Meet Ryan Chen!
(IMPORTANT: Disclaimer about 3rd and 4th photos at bottom)
Ryan is a third year, electrical engineering major from Cincinnati, Ohio. Ryan joined the team two years ago as a part of the DAQ team and has since moved his way up to become our electrical lead. Outside of GTOR, Ryan is a part of the Medical Robotics Club, he does research at the Dynamic Controls and System Lab, and he has also interned at Honda R&D.
What do you like most about being a part of GTOR?
"I like being able to develop cool electronics to help improve the car, as well as the vibes when working alongside other GTOR members."
Fun fact: Ryan thinks raw black pepper is spicy.
DISCLAIMER: The 3rd and 4th photos are part of a joke. The 4th photo is a meme in the electrical engineering community. It's a stock photo (taken seriously we're pretty sure) where the woman is holding the soldering iron completely incorrectly. The part she's holding is extremely hot and will burn you if it's turned on. Ryan wanted to make fun of this in his spotlight post, so we staged a photo for it. The iron is off (obviously) in the 3rd photo. Please never hold a soldering iron that way. Stay safe!
