Sinead O’Connor - may her memory be a blessing

In 2015 Sinead had a radical hysterectomy in Ireland for endometriosis. She was not offered hormone replacement therapy and her description of the lack of support, information and informed consent around the surgeon removing her ovaries is one many endometriosis patients can relate to.

She travelled to America in 2016 to access care after being failed by the Irish healthcare service which lead her to have a ‘total breakdown’.

Her story of protest, of fighting the status quo, of living with debilitating pain and mental health conditions and being repeatedly failed by the Irish healthcare system on all levels is something so many of us in Ireland have experienced and continue to experience today.

Every week people with endometriosis are still travelling. The healthcare of our societies most vulnerable is still falling horrifically short.

She was vilified in the press for her mental health just like so many Endo patients today are dismissed by medical professionals as being hysterical, anxious or irrational.

Sinead deserved better. We deserve better. We can’t stop fighting until that’s a reality.

This month marks a decade of teaching Pilates. From what began as a side gig to pay the bills as an artist and dancer launched a career that fulfills me in ways I wouldn’t have imagined. I could never have anticipated how much solving the puzzle of the human body would satisfy me creatively or how good it would feel watching clients’ quality of life improve over time. How many people can honestly say that they love their job? And mean it? I’ve been fortunate to work with and for and among so many incredible humans in New York. Thank you to all who have put your faith and trust in me throughout the years. Looking forward to what this next decade will bring.

After a long spell away, I’m back to teaching and so looking forward to seeing your faces.
