THE premier pole vault instruction training group in Atlanta! We emphasize the fundamentals of pole vaulting. Lesson #1: Plant Path and Proper Approach.

How we teach the pole vault...

We at PVATL have developed a system based off Vitaly Petrov's book and DVD, "Beginner to Bubka", where he implements the approach he used to coach Olympic champions (and world record holders) Sergei Bubka, Yelena Isanbayeva, Giuseppe Gibilisco, Fabiana Murer, and Thiago Braz de Silva. Our system is not a "tweak" or "quick fix" to current vaulters' current methods/s

Coach Fairbanks' Pole Vault Thought of the Week!

Pole Vault Thoughts of the Week:
This is one of my favorite PVTOW from back in the day. 2013, in fact! Enjoy!
September 14, 2013:
This one is a re-print from fall 2013. These statistics really put our sport in perspective. These marks and dates will really push home the fact that “It is not the pole”! This is especially true, if you understand the technology of the times. (I have made the “Mondo” revision for our boys. Updated to 2017)
So, You think You are Good?
So, we think we are good at the pole vault? Really…? Check this out:
First jumper over 11-0: 1887 / First Woman jumper over 13-0: 1992
First jumper over 12-0: 1904 / First Woman jumper over 14-0: 1995
First jumper over 13-0: 1912 / First Woman jumper over 15-0: 1999

First jumper over 18-0: 1970

Those are the “pros”. Now for High School:
First jumper over 13-6: 1954 (Steel pole)
First jumper over 14-0: 1955 (Steel pole)
First jumper over 14-6: 1956 (Steel pole)
First jumper over 15-0: 1957 (Steel pole)
(*It was the same kid, Jim Brewer, who jumped all those marks above. The WR at the time was 15-8. Think about that!)
First jumper over 16-0: 1966 (Glass)
First jumper over 17-0: 1968 (Glass) *This jump got him on the Olympic Team. WR at the time: 17-8.
First jumper over 18-0: 1981 (Glass)
First jumper over 19-0: 2017 (Glass) (Also first 6.00m Jump, 2018!)
High School Girls have been pretty amazing, also:
First Girl jumper over 11-0: 1997 (7th Grader)
First Girl jumper over 12-0: 1998 (8th Grader)
First Girl jumper over 13-0: 2000
First Girl jumper over 14-0: 2009

We are hoping these stats motivate you. They motivated me when I was young (…hard to imagine that: me being young…!)

Alright PVATL athletes! Read up! This is Pole Vault Atlanta's pole borrowing policy!

We are lucky to be able to loan poles & we have over 250 in the shed. The following policy helps your teammates, your coaches, but most importantly, the CLUB!

We are not a "pole borrowing" or "pole rental" company! We are an instructional company! Instruction & coaching are our goals & ambitions, so know that first!

Reach out to Tom R. at if you'd like pole rentals. The sooner the better! Always know that it's not always the pole! There are always adjustments you as the athlete can make with the pole!

WE DO HAVE PRACTICE ON SATURDAY & SUNDAY at normal times!

Coach Barry found some gems!

Photos from Pole Vault Atlanta's post 01/11/2024

Go to VaulterMagazine.com to get your issue today! Coach Barry wrote an article about the difference between a vaulter's technique & their style.

Coach Barry discusses how technique comes from a technical model & athletes develop stylistic idiosyncrasies in their vaults which is unique to them.

He compares the technical aspects of the pole vault of some elite vaulters, and he also mentions some of these athletes' style! Check it out at

This is also the middle school feature edition. The rising stars! "Z" is included in this issue as one of Georgia's up & coming pole vaulters!
