It’s been awhile since the Mods here have really posted anything, but for those of us who still follow us, thank you. I wanted to bring up a topic that doesn’t get enough attention, why 3 shot groups really aren’t relevant. So, these two 10 shot groups are with the same rifle but different ammo. The left is M118LR the right is M80. We all know that the precision load is going to shoot a tighter group than the standard ball ammo, but how often have we seen a 3 shot group of some Tula where rounds are almost touching at 100 yds claiming a rifle is MOA or better? Or we see a few 3 shot groups that would seem to indicate that individually? But here’s the thing, what happens when we take those three groups of three and overlay them? Often the all of a sudden turn in to 1.5+ moa groups even though individually they are ~1 MOA. Data sets matter, and using that data appropriately is just as important. When these groups were fired, the M80 actually stacked the first 3 rounds vertically, then with the next 7 rounds they went from flier to holding within the group, these fliers matter, be it because of you or the ammo, where the round impacts is where it impacts,and as we stack on more distance where errors compound because of these differences it can mean poor shot placement and misses.
