Yoga is an integral part of Black history—a tool of resistance and collective care. In 1975, published the story, “YOGA: Something for Everyone.” This message continues to ring true today, and is at the heart of what we believe at Yoga Alliance: Our vision is a better, bolder, more compassionate world grounded in yoga.
This month, we’ll be celebrating, honoring, and uplifting Black people’s contributions to this important practice, including highlighting those shaping history today.
As the world changes, much still stays the same. We lean into this ancient practice to guide us in deepening community and showing up as more grounded people. As Stanley Williford wrote in EBONY 50 years ago: “It is often the celebrities who have gotten the attention, but yoga is attractive to all manner of people in diverse occupations: lawyers, doctors, housewives, laborers.” Yoga is, in short, for the people. And historical documents like these remind us that believing such isn’t new; it’s the standard.

Forward fold, or uttanasana, has incredible benefits for the body and mind - calming, streches hips/hamstrings/calves while strengthening thighs and knees.
Beginners Tip:
As a beginner, it might be hard to increase the stretch. To make it easier, gently bend your knees, and imagine the sacrum sinking deep into the back part of the pelvis. Now, decrease the distance between your tailbone and the p***s. As you feel the resistance, push the top part of your thighs back and press your heels down. Straighten your knees. But be sure you don’t lock your knees when you straighten them.
Modifications: -Place yoga blocks under the hands.
Additional benefits: -This bend gives your digestive organs a good massage, thereby improving digestion.
-Relieves tension in the spine, neck, and back.
-Activates the abdominal muscles.
-Therapeutic for infertility, osteoporosis, and sinusitis.

This is a conversation I have with my workout family ALL OF THE TIME!
Apart of being a yogi is mindfulness. The ability to BE HERE NOW! Accepting and being thankful for the present.
There is nothing wrong with wanting better for ourselves but at some point we MUST acknowledge where we started vs where you are.
We may not be where we want to be but we DEFINITELY aren’t where we started!
