PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA — Coatesville’s season opener at Plymouth-Whitemarsh offered a clear snapshot of a young team still developing. After a 10-3 season led by veterans and sprinkled in with a few key big time juniors and super sophomores, the Red Raiders entered Friday night with only eight returning starters combined on offense and defense, plus a new quarterback in Mikal Shank, Jr.

The talent and potential were evident, but the 21-20 loss showed that chemistry and consistency will take some time.

***A FAST START, THEN AN OFFENSIVE STALL***

Coatesville struck first when junior running back Andre Watson, Jr. broke loose for a 28-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

The offense then struggled to sustain drives. At halftime, the Red Raiders had six points and four first downs, while Shank was 4-of-10 passing for 26 yards.

The early struggles reflected a team still building timing, communication, and trust among new contributors.

***DEFENSE CREATED OPPORTUNITIES — BUT MISSED TACKLES HURT***

Coatesville’s defense held firm for stretches, forcing two turnovers on downs. Senior Clarence Stewart also recovered a fumble, helping return momentum to the Red Raiders.

However, missed tackles proved costly, especially with approximately 30 seconds remaining. Plymouth-Whitemarsh connected on a 45-yard touchdown reception that put the Colonials ahead for good.

Multiple missed tackles changed the game.

***SPECIAL TEAMS AND PENALTIES PROVE COSTLY***

Coatesville also struggled in special teams, including missed tackles in kickoff coverage and two missed extra-point attempts in a game decided by one point.

Penalties and cramping also added to Coatesville’s challenges, with multiple players affected throughout the night, most notably 5⭐️ senior offensive/defensive lineman Max Hiller.

✨THE FOURTH QUARTER SHOWED THE POTENTIAL✨

Coatesville finally found its rhythm in the fourth quarter.

Watson broke free for a 43-yard touchdown run, his second score of the night. Shank then connected with junior wide receivers Sage Bradshaw and Nico Christino as the passing game came alive.

The surge culminated in a 45-yard touchdown connection to two-way workhorse Sage Bradshaw, giving Coatesville a late opportunity to win after Shank connected with junior Nico Christino for the 2-point conversion.

The offense’s fourth-quarter ex*****on showed what the team could become once its timing and confidence improve.

💡PERSPECTIVE AFTER A ONE-POINT LOSS💡

There are no moral victories, and Coatesville left Plymouth-Whitemarsh with plenty to correct. Still, the Red Raiders replaced much of last year’s 10-3 team, returned only eight starters combined on offense and defense, and introduced a new starting quarterback.

Despite missed tackles, penalties, missed extra points, offensive struggles, and defensive breakdowns, Coatesville lost by only one point on the road.

Watson provided explosive plays. Shank settled in late. Bradshaw delivered a big touchdown. The defense created opportunities.

Now comes the next step: turning those flashes into consistency.

💪FROM GROWING PAINS TO GROWTH💪

The loss does not define Coatesville’s season since it has Ches-Mont League play ahead of them, but the response will matter.

The film provides clear areas for improvement: tackling, penalties, special-teams ex*****on, offensive rhythm, and finishing opportunities. Those corrections should guide a focused week of practice before the Red Raiders face Northeast.

Friday night was painful, but it also revealed a team with room to improve and the talent to do so.

You only experience growing pains when you’re growing.

On to the next challenge! The Red Raiders head to Philadelphia this Thursday, September 3rd, for a 7 PM road matchup against Northeast.
