25 years ago today, the last WCW NITRO episode was aired 😢

Titled Night of Champions it was a Spring Break episode help at the Boardwalk Beach Resort, Panama City Beach, Florida.

The circa 1,000 got to see a dark match where Mark Jindrak defeated Jason Jett. The first thing the viewers at home got to see was a pre-taped backstage segment from Cleveland, Ohio (the site of that night's WWF Raw is War) in which Vince McMahon announced that he had bought World Championship Wrestling and would address the WCW fans and wrestlers later in the show during a simulcast on both the TNN and TNT networks.

The first match of the broadcast saw a unification bout where US champion Booker T defeated Scott Steiner (w/ Midajah) to retain the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship and win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship (5:11). A clear sign that WWF wanted to bring Booker T in but not Scott. He sat out his Time Warner contract but did later join WWF from 2002-2004 in an underwhelming return.

Rey Mysterio Jr. & Billy Kidman then defeated Shannon Moore & Evan Karagias and Kaz Hayashi & Yang in a Three Way Tag Team Match to become the #1 Contenders for the WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship, a match that would be held later in the evening (3:40).

Shane Helms defeated Chavo Guerrero Jr. to retain the WCW Cruiserweight Championship (4:39). Fortunately, both men would join WWE as part of the 25 contacts which were included in their purchase of WCW.

Sean O'Haire & Chuck Palumbo defeated Lance Storm & Mike Awesome to retain the WCW World Tag Team Championship (3:23). All four men would be part of the invasion angle.

Shawn Stasiak (w/ Stacy Keibler) defeated Bam Bam Bigelow (1:25). The less said about this match the better! Bigelow sat out his Time Warner contract and returned to the Indies in 2002.

Rey Mysterio Jr. & Billy Kidman defeated Elix Skipper & Kid Romeo (c) to win the WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship (4:43). Kidman and Skipper moved over to WWE as part of the invasion angle, Romeo went to Puerto Rico to wrestle for the World Wrestling Council. Mysterio wrestled in Mexico and the United States until debuting in the freshly renamed WWE in 2002, where apart from time away between 2015-18, he still wrestles to this day.

To close the show out, and the end of WCW, Sting defeated Ric Flair (7:19) in a rematch from the first WCW NITRO episode back on 4th September 1995. Flair took a break from wrestling and reappeared in the WWE right at the end of the invasion angle. Sting became a legend in TNA before finally making a move to WWE in 2014, which was unfortunately cut short by injury in the ring.

WCW. Gone, but not forgotten thanks to the loyal fans. Now that a WCW YouTube channel has been launched by WWE, newer fans a getting a chance to taste Rasslin, while older fans are able to reminisce about their heroes.
