Nobody tells you this about being an academy coach… ⚽️

When I first started coaching, I thought it was all about tactics, lineups, and winning games.

2 years later, I’ve realized coaching is way bigger than soccer.

It’s about confidence. Communication. Patience. Leadership. Energy. And understanding that every kid develops differently.

One of the biggest things I learned is that parents can either become your biggest supporters or your biggest challenge. Building relationships with them matters. Learn their names. Talk to them after training. Keep them involved. The parents who trust you will support everything you’re trying to build for their child.

I’ve also learned that confidence changes everything for young players.

A lot of kids don’t avoid things because they’re lazy. They avoid them because they’re scared to fail or embarrassed to mess up in front of others. As coaches, our words carry weight. One moment of encouragement can completely change how a player sees themselves.

Another thing I’ve learned: training has to be fun AND competitive.

Reality is not every player is going to become a pro footballer. So while developing them, you also have to create memories and an environment they genuinely enjoy being part of. Push players to improve without making them hate the game. And never allow teammates to tear each other down. Camaraderie matters.

I also strongly believe every player can improve.

Some players develop faster. Some take longer. But your job as a coach is to make every player feel like they belong. A player with confidence and belief can improve more than people expect. This is where real coaching ability shows.

And finally…development will always matter more than winning.

There will be game days where everything you worked on during training completely disappears 😭 But that’s part of coaching. Teaching players takes time. Focus on building the foundation first:
dribbling, passing, defending, decision making, confidence, communication.

Winning comes after.
