Georgia Mountain Falconry

Partnering with a wild animal while it pursues its prey. That’s falconry – nothing like it in the great outdoors. How can you do it? The first step is to pass the Georgia Falconry Exam. So far, over 370 people from ages 12 to 65 have successfully completed the Academy, and received a real head start into this life of flying raptors on game.

Our next Academy will be January 22-24, 2027 at White County High School. Cleveland, GA.

Jessica now holds the record for greatest distance traveled to attend the Apprentice Academy. She came all the way from California to the mountains of Georgia only to be under the wing protection of an African Eagle (Verreaux).

Another highlight from this weekend... Reggie Worthy, who attended our Academy last March at Banning Mills, brought his first bird to Vogel Friday... trapped just 6 days before. I think Reggie is enjoying his new hunting partner.

One of the highlights of the Apprentice Academy is the "equipment making" time. Brilliantly taught by Greg Ames, Chris Dover and Brian Holley... all learn how to make anklets, jesses, lures, etc.

Take a look at what happened to this female Osprey. WOW. Kudos to whomever rescued her from the retention pond, and to Bells Ferry Animal Hospital that cleaned her up (in more ways than one) and then got her to the Chattahoochee Nature Center for final preparations for eventual release.

At the last Apprentice Academy (at Banning Mills) we had a full house for classwork, and divided up in smaller groups for equipment making instruction. We have another full house coming up August 28-30 at Vogel State Park.
