Being asymmetric can lead to injuries due to muscles that are not activating correctly, whether that is too much or too little, typically it is a combination of the two. A lack of balance in muscles causes one muscle group to overwork while another underperforms. We can use the MAPS machine (Flexologist, Grace’s, scores pictured above) to identify which muscles need more flexibility and which muscles need more activation. We can also determine which side is being favored use that information to work on counteracting the pattern through stretching and exercises. We do this prior to the stretch so that when we go to the bench, we have a foundational idea of how to approach the stretch.
