I dropped these tips over on Facebook and I figured Iβd drop them here too! As I continue this crappie escapade... here are a few tips for finding success as a beginner crappie angler:
1. Use your local survey reports and maps to find small lakes that hold crappie. Small lakes will allow you to cover a lot of ground to find fish. Small lakes with a single basin are the easiest.
2. During early ice check the status of the weeds. Healthy weeds will still hold crappie and sunfish.. making it a fairly easy place to start catching fish as beginner. If the weeds look dead go deep.
3. Start drilling holes, especially if you choose to try the basin. Iβll often times make a big X across it.
4. Use your electronics and start checking for fish. A group of suspended marks almost always mean you are on them. Check until you mark them.
5. Once you find them, make a circle of holes you can keep bouncing around on as they migrate.
6. As for bait, small jigs (1/24 to 1/32) with crappie minnows (aka small fatheads) is a great place to start. Grab an ultra light rod or spring bobber so you can watch the bite. Use light line 4 lb to 6 lb max.
7. Do a slow and steady raise (the best tip I learned from Ana on Ice) to turn over more fish. Less aggressive is usually key.
Crappie is one the easiest and rewarding fish to catch, especially when targeting them in small bodies of water.
