I gave everything to jiu Jitsu since finding her in 2015, and she is finally giving back. If you've been following me since then, I am sure you're celebrating for me too 🥹
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I found jiu Jitsu halfway through a psychology and philosophy degree at 21. My intention with my education was to end up in a position to help people through art therapy. From the moment of stepping onto the mat, I knew that was what I had found. Regarding the parallel to my original plan, I have finished my master's degree and am working through my Ph.D. with team New Wave alongside some of the greatest ever to do it 🥲

I have arrived, and it's not even the beginning 🫣

Magical Weekend of training and playing 😌

Slowly but surely finding our new grove in Austin. Texas reminds me of Alberta in a way. Guns, cowboys, hippies, outside time 🔫 🤠 ☮️ 🌳

Peaks and valleys make for beautiful scenery, especially from miles and miles away. But when living on either spectrum, the height can be exhilarating, and the low can be mundane. Each win and loss is an individual experience that you can feel many emotions about, but collectively they build this incredible tapestry.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I zoom out on my life, especially with my jiu jitsu experience, I can see this picture and all the little details carefully etched in. Every class, every competition, every roll brings life and color, contrast, and depth. As an artist, I find it satisfying to know that there will never be an ending to this tapestry. As long as my feet touch the tatami, I am weaving this beautiful experience.

It makes me appreciate everything that has been a part of my jiu jitsu; in the end, it will be an incredible scene.

I used to find it easy to share my thoughts on this platform; it was almost cathartic. Something has changed, and it’s hard to put words to it. I want to say I’m overwhelmed, but that would insinuate that I don’t like it. I want to say everything is changing, but that would fall short of accounting for everything that remains the same.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One thing that pops up every day is that I’m excited. I’m excited for this weekend at . I’m excited to train alongside the best in the world. I’m excited to keep pursuing the highest level of education in this martial art.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s to the twist and turns, the ups and downs, and the all around ❤️

Very excited to step onto the 193 stage for the first time. I’m matched up against ‘21 purple belt light feather champ Lauren Sears so it should be a spicy match.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you swipe through to the last photo, you will see that in Jan of 2018, I applied to be on the show. I was a lowly blue belt and was told to reapply at purple. Purple blew by but opportunity comes to those who keep working lol.

I hope this post encourages you to read 📚 Here are a few of the titles I've been cruising through this month.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I especially like “Dune” because of its parallels with martial arts, and its characteristical map of the human mind.

Let me know if you read and enjoy 😊

Looking for the blue and white belts that said they would be back after the holidays 🧐
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Seriously, when I started jiujitsu, I kept hearing things like 99% of those who try jiu jitsu don’t make it to black belt. Now, I don’t see how we could say with certainty that the percentage is true due to a lack of actual quantifiable data, but there are apparent retention issues.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why? It’s not for everyone and those of us who have made it would probably like to say it’s because we have some exceptional quality that makes us different.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, I don’t think that is the case. People learning a new skill, especially something as complex as jiu jitsu, need structure, feedback, and a goal post. Frankly, a black belt is just too far away for most people, and even blue belt is a long shot. Most struggle to meet weekly goals, let alone a 10-12 year one.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of the personal goals that I have committed to this year is to help people overcome their obstacles and continue on their jiu jitsu journey.

As many losses as it takes to win 🥇
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you haven’t noticed, for the past few months I have kept to myself. Not posting as much and definitely not sharing 99% of what has been going on. This isn’t because it’s not worth sharing or that I am ashamed of the results of my work. Since beginning my journey with jiu jitsu I have been extremely candid with the trails and tribulations of this extreme lifestyle. I’ve shared information about my goals, relationships, wins and losses. It has been fulfilling and rewarding to connect with like minded individuals and give light to topics that regularly go undisclosed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So why has my pattern changed?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the last 3 months I have competed in 3 World Championships, lived in 3 different cities, traveled through 3 different countries. I am the furthest I have ever been in my career and facing the hardest challenges to date. More than anything I need time to reflect on my experiences, process, and adjust my sails.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That being said, I am happy to announce that for the foreseeable future my ship has found port. I will be in Austin, under the tutelage of John Danaher and his team.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To the future and every single decision that has lead me here 🍻
