KALI Sunday Funday
In this post, we’ll explore a foundational practice for beginners in Filipino martial arts: “Backhand Strikes Meet All Attacks.” In the accompanying video demonstration, you will see Tuhon Ray and I engaging in this essential drill, where the feeder delivers angles one through five while the defender utilizes backhand strikes and step-slide-shuffle footwork. A key component of this drill is distance management, allowing practitioners to maintain appropriate spacing, which is crucial for effective sparring. Through repeated practice, they can develop better coordination between their strikes and footwork, reinforcing the importance of timing and rhythm in sparring. As they progress, practitioners begin to see how other drills translate into application during sparring, with the final strike leading to a follow-up maneuver, fostering a more dynamic exchange.
To enhance the training experience, additional attributes can be incorporated later, such as more footwork techniques like lateral movement, triangle footwork, and insights on how the creation of angles factors into setting up offense and counter-offense strategies. While the focus is on backhand strikes, integrating forehand strikes, slashes, thrusts, and gunting, and other techniques can enhance versatility (a video for another time), teaching practitioners when to switch between strikes based on what’s being fed to them. Later, in close-quarter range, they can be introduced to other maneuvers such as parrying and angling off, which can help in evading attacks while setting up counterstrikes, along with how other drills can complement striking techniques.
