Can you perform a small single leg squat with GOOD CONTROL? If not and/or there’s a difference side to side - it’s a good idea to address it NO MATTER HOW STRONG YOU ARE ON TWO LEGS. I see some of the strongest athletes in the world & the ones who often develop lower body injuries lack this ability & rarely ever train single leg.

I’m not saying perfecting your single leg squat is going to add 100 lbs to your squat - but better balance, stability & coordination on one leg are key areas I look for when assessing injury and movement competency.

My video “5 tips to move like a world-class athlete” with that just dropped explains more! Go check it out!

Hear me out…we all have seen absolutely jacked athletes who move poorly. This is because isolated muscle building doesn’t help optimize coordination, balance, and “functional” strength. Sports like basketball, football, weightlifting, etc require use of the entire “kinetic chain” for optimal movement & performance.

And before you say “just do both” … consider this. Every exercise you perform in the gym is like a “withdrawal” from your bank account. When you rest, eat and recover you make “deposits” back into that account so you can have more “funds” to withdrawal in the future. Withdrawal too much & you end up with overdraft fees. So each and every exercise you perform needs to have a purpose & fit within a plan to create optimal outcomes. More isn’t always better. So for an ATHLETE - spend your funds wisely because you only have so much energy each workout. If you have extra “funds” … sure do some bodybuilding movements.

There’s a big difference between abs that “show” and abs that “help you go & move better.” There’s nothing wrong with trying to pursue a more aesthetic body BUT you should have a good foundation of core stability built first. Otherwise strength & hypertrophy ab work is like building a house on a bed of sand - the most beautiful structures don’t stand long without a good foundation.

We come in many shapes & sizes (including many variations in hip joint anatomy) which necessitate small changes in stance width & toe angle that best fit YOUR body! While there are general recommendations that work for many, there will always be some that don’t fit the “textbook standard” and need a variation.

In 1905, Dr. Phil Hoffman wrote an article in the American Journal of Orthopedic Surgery comparing the feet of those who only went barefoot and those that wore traditional shoes. In it he showed many examples of how narrow shoes negatively change the foot shape over time, hindering foot function & increasing risk of injuries.

The crazy thing is still today in 2023 (over 100 years after this article was published in a major scientific journal) we still have many people who are completely unaware of how bad most shoes are. The shoes manufactured by BIG billion dollar shoe companies hinder your foots function & increase risk of injury.

If you care about optimizing your strength, fitness, nutrition and all other aspects of your life - you need to learn about this topic & find footwear that allows your feet to function properly.

Fundamentals MUST come first. Unfortunately this message is often blurred and overshadowed by the advertisements for things that should be seen as supplementary and not a substitute.

Massage guns, supplements or any paid training programming may have their place but if your lifestyle is lacking the basics that allow for optimal growth, recovery & adaptation to training - it’s like you’re trying to paint a car that has significant engine/structural problems. Focus on the basics first.

Einstein had problems with his feet. In 1952, shoe store owner Peter Hulit got an urgent call from Einstein's housekeeper. She told him that Einstein was in pain and that he could not find a comfortable pair of shoes.

When Hulit made the house call, he recalled, “This magnificent guy came down the stairs... smoking his pipe, and he whipped this folded piece of paper out of his pocket and said, 'Zis is ze problem, Mr. Hulit.'

Hulit opened the piece of paper (second photo), Einstein had made a sketch of the source of his problem. He was feeling pain on the outer edge of his feet and his big toe. He concluded that he needed a shoe that had more space around the top half of his feet with even distribution of pressure.
