It's #MEMBERMONDAY!!! 😀 We'd like to introduce you to awesome member, Ernie DiPalo! 👏😍 Ernie has become a permanent fixture..and some may even say a "legend" at Coppermine Racquet & Fitness! Read below for Ernie's thoughts on why he has chosen to be a member at Coppermine for almost 30 years!!!....
"I have been a member of Bare Hills/Coppermine continuously since early in the 1990’s. Shortly after I joined, the Bare Hills facility fell into disrepair. The roof leaked and much of the equipment was out of order, as was the steam room and showers. You would have thought that I would have moved on to another fitness facility, but no, I hung on, hoping the owner at that time would begin to update the facility. It never happened until another owner took over. Even then, the repairs were slow to happen. However, one factor kept me on...the efficient and friendly staff! Regina Roesner had just joined the staff and had a positive impact on my workouts. She, at that time, taught a step aerobic class that was very well attended. In addition, Sheldon Chazen, had a similar tennis program that he still offers today, that I enjoyed.
Along came the following owner, Jack Dwyer, who practically gutted the building and installed updated fitness equipment and added to the, already friendly, staff. The roof no longer leaked, the locker rooms were redone and Bare Hills became one of the best fitness and tennis centers in Baltimore!
The current owner of Coppermine brought in even greater and additional fitness opportunities and improved the facility EVEN MORE with the latest technology in fitness equipment. They continue to maintain an excellent staff of administrators, maintain a pleasant, updated environment with courteous staff and competent physical trainers. I’d say they now operate THE BEST fitness and tennis facility in Baltimore.
After all these years , I’m now 86 years old, and I still workout 5 days a week. My routine is to use the machines for upper and lower body workouts one day and aerobic exercises on alternate days. The trainers on the floor are always helpful in providing guidance toward safe and effective workouts. At the end of my workouts, I enjoy a comforting steam and shower and then time for a cup of coffee and discussions with my friends in the lounge area.
Thanks to Coppermine Racquet & Fitness, and its' staff, I maintain a healthy and enjoyable routine."

Anyone out there feel like they may be enjoying "sweet treats" a little too often?!?🙋♀️🍭🧁🍩😬 Read on to learn more about the hidden dangers behind sugar, written by Coppermine Racquet & Fitness' own Director of Personal Training, and Institute of Integrative Health & Nutrition Coach, Dawn-Marie Cain!
Too much added sugar doesn’t just make us fat, it makes us sick. In soda and sports drinks, too much added sugar can over tax your organs. Drinking just one 12 ounce soda per day or 7 sodas per week increases our risk of dying from heart disease by 1/3. With the leading cause of death in the U.S being heart disease this does not bode well for our health. Too much sugar can also damage your liver, just like too much alcohol. 31% of American adults and 13% of American children have non-alcoholic liver disease. It is no wonder these statistics are so high with 74% of packaged foods having sugar hiding in them! Many of these foods are assumed to be healthy such as energy bars and yogurt. Unless you read the ingredients you would not necessarily know. Be aware that there are at least 61 names for sugar!
Sugar is everywhere…in salad dressings, pretzels, yogurt, oatmeal, chicken stock, pickles, sandwich bread….the list is endless. The number one problem in modern diets is sugar, not fat. Sugar is behind the obesity epidemic, diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Sugar is highly addictive, stimulating the pleasure center of our brain. This is the problem, once you eat it, the body craves more and more. In scientific studies, mice were given the choice between cocaine and sugar..the mice chose sugar everytime. This demonstrates the physiological addictiveness of sugar. Many foods are labeled "natural" and look very healthy packaging. This is what the manufacturers hope you will think. Read all food lables, not just how many calories it contains. Ingredients are listed from the most to the least in order. If sugar or another name for sugar is high on the list...be aware!
What can we do about it? The best thing to do is remove ALL added sugars from your diet. Read the ingredient list on all labels. Remember, ingredients are listed in order of amount in the food item. It is not unusual to see three different sugars in one food item.
