It's that time again. It crept up fast. Now if it would just get above freezing. I can hear the propane being sucked out of the tank. Heaters are screaming on high. It's going to be a long night keeping an eye on these little fuzzy buggers.
Since social distancing is an everyday event for me. I figured it would be a great time to retrofit the new feed bins with their unloaders and straight augers. All that's left is wire the motors and grease them up before a test run.
Was able to get a crane in today to set the new feed bins at their forever home. They are anchored down and ready to be fit with the augers.
Storm update. Back up and running We just finished fixing holes and tenting the net in the pens that had birds in it. The only loss of birds were the ones that flew the proverbial coop through the torn netting. But it could have been worse. A lot worse! Lots of pen work is an inevitability for this spring.
You got it easy ! Say some people! You run your own business. Your so lucky! You can make your own schedule. You got it made! SURE I DO! spending four days trying save your pens and rescue birds will definitely try your soul. But! If it was easy. Everyone would do it. Lots of pen repair coming this spring.
When your trying to clean out a pen of birds. And they just don't want to go. They are close to being as stubborn as I am. yes Linda's first attempt at a video. She will get the hang of it.
When you ask your rescue dog a.k.a. your little buddy if he wants to help you for a couple of minutes. Cattle dogs love to help!
Corn is finally tall enough to let the birds out. What a crappy spring! But getting it done none the less.
Finally! The rain stopped! A few days behind on planting. I tilled this pen once in the morning and again in the afternoon just so I could get some corn in the ground. Still a few soft spots. But the planter made it. Lots more to go!
Day 10. Chicks are almost double in size . They are losing there fuzz in exchange for feathers. Some are starting to practice their takeoff and landing skills already. They should be flying over the 18" cardboard that's rounding out the corners of the room. By Monday it will have to come out.
Lots of little fuzzy buggers!
And this is why we move the remander of the birds to the winter pens in December. My mortal enemy! ICE !!!!!!!!!
This year we had the honor of supplying the pheasants for not one. But two national events. This year in October. We delivered to Elmira N.Y. for the ECSCA.the Cocker Spanial Nationals. And I just returned from Cambridge Maryland for the ESSFT. The English Springer Spanial Nationals. Linda and I are blessed with great family and friends that have been so supportive of us all these years. We are truly grateful for it all!
So Ruger and I had to move some birds this afternoon. As always! There is that one rooster that thinks he's the king of the castle. After a brief attack by the pheasant. Ruger showed him who's top dog. He even left the tail feathers on the bird when he swatted him back with the others.
First snow of the year. With ice!!!!!!! But not enough to take nets down. YET!!!!!!
That smile when you realize you have sorted through the last hatch of pheasants for the season. Moments before he scratches the hell out of your arm! It always has to be the last one that gets you.
Some four week old birds just chilling mid day.
First birds out. And loving the corn!
By some miracle. The corn will be tall enough to let the birds wander in the first pen soon.
Trying to get caught up. Not happening anytime soon. But I did manage to get a pen fitted and planted last night before the rain so we are clawing our way forward as usual.
Here we go! Again!
It's a darn good thing Ruger and I moved some birds around yesterday. Though the snow and cold doesn't bother those will feathers or fur. I have neither. Brrrrrrr.
There is no better way to spend the day pilfering christmas trees to repurpose as a little extra cover for the birds. Or is there?
New feed bins came today. We have a lot of work to do in the spring building two more automated feed systems I want to put up. Then I realized. The moment they are built. I no longer have to load the 3 tons of pheasant chow a week in the feeders in the back by hand anymore. And that my friends, is PRICELESS! !!!
Stopped on for an event at Vernon National Shooting Preserve this morning. Checked out their pro shop. They carry many brands like Caesar Guerini, Beretta, Browning, Franchi, Syren, Oriskany Arms for Shot guns. And even Kimber, Glock, Smith&Wesson, and Springfield Armory for hand guns.
Ruger is the one push wonder today!
No matter how many times you push a pen. There always seems to be one bird that tests Ruger ' s patience. He is getting ready to swat her to get her going in the second picture.
Where ever did the summer go? Well it's that time of year again. Birds are coming along ok. Could have done without all the rain this summer. But we will endure.
If they are not under in the corn. They are on the corn!
