Contact your local representatives to save from paying sales tax on board, lessons, horse shows, vet expenses, farrier, saddle fitting, and so on.... this would also mean we would have to raise prices to cover the added expense of the sales tax the farm would have to pay for the services we use...add in increasing minimum wage and it makes running a small business with low margins even harder.

Legislators are proposing a $2.6 billion tax hike by expanding the sales tax to hundreds of essential services that Marylanders use every day. This is a tax on working families, single moms, retirees, and small businesses.

We are fighting to hold the line against out-of-touch, tax and spend politicians. Stand with us. Contact your representatives and tell them you won’t support these massive tax hikes: http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Members/District

[02/14/20]   This coming Monday morning Jen will be available for lessons and makeups! It's supposed to be 50 degrees. Come ride on your extra day off.

This is well put post about contact. Its something I try to get riders to understand about how to help and support the horse to get a better ride and jump. When we ride, we are responsible for being the master of our own form but to also help the horse to use the best form possible. This helps the horse carry himself better and prevents injury as long it's not over done.

There is a saying about riding a horse on contact, versus riding a horse on a loose rein---

"You don't ride with contact to get at the mouth. You ride on contact to get at the hind end and the middle, and the mouth."

Riding a horse with contact, if it is elastic, feeling contact, and not some sort of hard death grip, allows the rider to encourage the hocks and stifles to engage, which puts the hindquarters under the center of the mass of the horse, so that there is lift involved with each stride, and not only push.

Think of a bike rider peddling along on a long flat paved road. This requires a certain degree of effort. Now, there comes a mild incline. You have to peddle harder. This is what moderate engagement causes the horse to have to do.

The greater the degree of engagement, the steeper the hill, to continue that analogy. In other words, like a human doing push ups, when the rider asks for engagement (The act of flexing hocks and stifles, bringing the hind legs more under the horse, planting, and lifting), it does two things---

One---It hurts, It is weight lifting. Weight lifting hurts.
Two---It builds strength. It is weight lifting. Weight lifting builds strength.

So realize how much asking for greater engagement, through contact coupled with driving aids, can be that classic double edged sword.

Yes, it can be good for the horse, as it helps turn the horse into a stronger athlete.

No, the horse doesn't like it, because unlike the human athlete, the horse has no concept of "becoming a stronger athlete." What does he care about our blue ribbons? Zero. We need to comprehend that truth.

So, as we ask for more engagement by using "negotiated driving aids into negotiated restraining aids," we need to be extremely careful that we, as trainers, don't turn training sessions into torture sessions.

We can't be like those drill instructors who yell at the recruits, "Down on the floor, boy, and give me 20 push ups." We can ask for a few push ups, then back off. Then a little tiny bit more, quit with that. Build a little bit at a time, week after week, month after month. It is the only way to get improvement physically without damage emotionally.

If you do not understand this basic concept, have someone with a whip make you do push ups, and when you get to the outer limits of what you are capable of dishing out, have them whip you for "one more." Now, "one more."

See how you like it---

Pennsylvania Horse Tests Positive for EHM – The Horse

Prevention strategies are vaccination of flu/rhino twice a year, avoid sharing tack, bits, water buckets etc and nose to nose contact with outside horses. Basically be friendly with fellow horsemen when off the farm but dont share equipment and keep horses a safe distance from each other.

Sunday, a few riders from Bay Meadow got out to the Goblin Gallop! Everyone had such a great time! Huge Thankyou to 4-H For sponsoring this event, and to Fairhill for letting us use their land! 5 miles of beautiful trails and a fun scavenger hunt really made this remarkable.

We’ve come to the conclusion we need to get more photos of Gabby riding!
Four of our riders attended the Hunter Derby last Sunday! Everyone had a great time and Heather even pulled out 7th place out of a big hunter class! Congratulations to everyone riding, we had a blast!

Our riders had a great time at the last mill show this year. Gabby took home reserve champion on Indy, Dahlia took home 4th place in all of her classes of roughly 20 riders! Extremely impressive for her first show doing 2’3 hunters! Carmen ended with a 4th and a 2nd on Dunn for her jumper rounds. Sadly we didn’t get any photos of Gabby. Congratulations again to all riders! And Thankyou to Tranquility Manor Farms and to The Mill! 🥳

Everyone had a great time schooling at Grove Point! Sadly we couldn’t find the beach in time, but we plan on going back! Thankyou Peggy for the AMAZING photos! ❤️
