from last night:

Dear Camp Modin,
It is one of the most perfect and beautiful nights of the summer, the lake is like glass and there is no wind and it's a perfect night to listen to nature....the loons and the birds...and all I can hear right now is your loudspeaker. It wouldn't be so bad if there was lovely Shabbat singing going on....but it sounds mostly like a lot of people whooping and hollering, and a little bit of very atonal singing of a few lines here and there. I can't begin to tell you how much it intrudes on the splendor of this evening. Is the loudspeaker REALLY necessary? I was at camp for many, many years and we never used one. Please can't you turn it off and find other ways of pleasantly communicating? Pretty please?
Rest up on the wake boats, will
you? The lake sounds like a speedway today.
I was one of the British Counsellors way back in 1985; back then I think there were about 20 of us. I'm just curious to know if there were still Counsellors from the UK these days.
WOW - my mom worked at Modin in the summer of 1938.

In 1922 three Jewish educators created Camp Modin, "the camp with a Jewish Ideal." This ideal began as a desire to provide children not merely with a recreational experience, but a summer that would contribute meaningfully to their overall development. The gifted and devoted educators who founded Camp Modin applied the best of what was thought and known about helping young people to grow, and established a nurturing community on a pristine lake in the woods of Maine.

For a century, we have carried these ideals forward, and over the years have welcomed thousands of campers and staff from around the globe into the Modin family. Tonight began our one-hundredth season as the oldest continuously operating Jewish camp in the United States.

As excited as we are for camp, we want to pause and reflect on how difficult the past 15 months have been for all of us—particularly our children. Social distancing, mask wearing, and hybrid learning have taken their toll on the emotional and social well-being of our kids, resulting in an increase in anxiety and self-doubt.

That is why the camp experience is so essential to their growth and development. Camp helps children to grow as individuals, and to be a part of a rich and vibrant community. Camp helps children to forge lifelong friendships with peers and young-adult mentors. Camp helps children to gain independence, to be members of a team, to persevere, to have strength of character, to overcome anxieties and self-doubt, and to show love, friendship, and compassion to others.

Since 1922, Modin has continued to positively impact the lives of children, and as we enter our 100th season tonight, may the magic continue.

Camp friends are best friends. They are strangers who become family. With lots of quality time at camp, we see friendships develop and build summer over camp summer. Especially in these pandemic times, where parents have expressed that their kids have been isolated, on devices, and deprived of peer interactions, we are happy for our returning Maine campers to see their camp friends, and for our new campers to make new friends and form quality connections. To our families, friends and staff around the world. The events of last week are not a reflection on the true America or its people All nations have moments that challenge them, but it is how they respond, learn, and rise above their failures that defines their character. Although we are a vast nation of differing opinions and believes, we have a commonality that binds us. Look no further than our country's motto: "E Pluribus Unum — Out of Many, One." Here's to the success of our country and its new leadership. Here's to a brighter, healthier future. Here's to welcoming our Modin community back to the shores of Salmon Lake. Here's to each and every one of you.

Hi Modinites!

We are excited to announce that our annual Camp Modin reunion will take place this coming Sunday December 6th at 5:00 PM (ET). We will be hosting this event on ZOOM. A Message Of Thanks to our Modinite Families & Staff

It has been quite some time since we touched base with our Modinite community. First and foremost, we hope that your family, friends, and loved-ones are all healthy and safe, wherever they may be.

A couple of housekeeping points: While there is no reunion this season, we do plan to release ModinView 2020, our video yearbook. We will send out an e-blast when it is available for streaming. At the same time we will be announcing the members of our community who will be inducted into our five and eight year clubs. Our five-year members receive a special sweatshirt and our eight-year inductees are awarded a fleece jacket, both of which will be mailed to the recipients.

Despite all the challenges we have faced in recent months, there is still so much for us to be thankful for. We are thankful for being able to safely and successfully open camp this past summer. We are thankful that the scientific efforts surrounding treatments and vaccines continue to look promising. We are thankful for being able to forge ahead for summer 2021—our hundredth season—which kicks off in 210 days.

Most importantly, we are thankful to each and every one of you for being a part of our Modin family. What has sustained us for a century is the strength and commitment of the Modin community. In a world full of uncertainty, it is the bonds of friendships, and the connections we have to each other, that continue to give us faith, hope, and indeed a world of thanks.

To our families and staff celebrating, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

Here's to Camp Modin…and to each and every one of you.

Fondly,

Howard, Lisa & Samara
