During a conversation today the idea of Santosha came up. Santosha, one of the Niyamas of Patanjali’s Eight Limbs of Yoga, can be roughly translated as contentment and can be a tricky thing to practice. How does one practice contentment while still striving towards goals and dreams?

Often contentment can be confused with complacency, however, it is anything but. Santosha is accepting and appreciating what you have and where you already are while still moving forward. It is appreciating the moments between the moments and understanding that there will always be a new goal, new dream, and something new to strive for. Can you, en route to whatever is next, take a moment to appreciate the journey of it all and find along the road?

This is a week that we, as a nation, collectively give thanks. An attitude of gratitude is an excellent way to remember who and what we have in our lives that bring us joy, comfort, and love. Gratitude, however, can be practiced throughout the year and as Psychotherapist and Author, Amy Morin shares in her Forbes article, “7 Scientifically Proven Benefits Of Gratitude That Will Motivate You To Give Thanks Year-Round” shows us that the holidays are not the only time to feel the effects of gratitude.

1. Gratitude opens the door to more relationships.
2. Gratitude improves physical health.
3. Gratitude improves psychological health.
4. Gratitude enhances empathy and reduces aggression.
5. Grateful people sleep better.
6. Gratitude improves self-esteem.
7. Gratitude increases mental strength.

Here are some ways to carry these benefits into your year ahead - start a gratitude journal and every morning or night write down a few things that you are grateful for, silently list what you’re grateful for before going to bed at night (you might be surprised at how quickly you drift off to dreamland in a feeling of happiness), or try writing the word ‘Gratitude’ on a piece of paper and every time you need a reminder take it out of your wallet, pocket, or purse and smile at all the amazing things that come to mind.

There are many different forms of mediation. Thank goodness! Because not all meditations necessarily resonate with everyone. Japa meditation works with the repetition of Mantra (definition here). Often times Mala beads are often used to help the practitioner keep track of not only how many times she/he has repeated the mantra, but also as a tool used to infuse intention.

Mudra. What is it and how can we use them both on and off the mat?

Mudra, a word with many meanings, is essentially a hand (or in some cases a body) gesture, position, or seal connecting us with our minds, bodies and states of consciousness. As Gertrud Hirschi, author of “Mudras: Yoga in your Hands” sums it up as, “So mudras engage certain areas of the brain and/or soul and exercise a corresponding influence on them.” Just like our physical Asana postures in yoga, Mudras can have profound effects on your practice and meditations from increasing memory to detoxification.

Try Chin Mudra (pictured above), known as the gesture of knowledge. Place the tip of your thumb, symbolic of the cosmic Divine, on your index finger, symbolic of individual consciousness, and allow your other fingers to extend long. Explore it during your meditation and see what shifts on a physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual level. 🙏🏼

Vinyasa. Perhaps you’ve heard your instructors say it numerous times during class or have signed up for a class with this as the title, however, what does Vinyasa actually mean and how is it different than other forms of exercise?

Vinyasa is a type of yoga, under the Hatha umbrella, that links breath and movement together to create balance in the mind and body. Here’s the part that often gets left out, Vinyasa also means to “to place in a special way.” It is through this “special way” or intention that Vinyasa Yoga distinguishes itself from other forms of physical exercise. Through mindful and intentional movement and breathing we are able to connect on a physical level and more deeply on a spiritual level.

What are you connecting with today on your mat?

Did you know that yoga was traditionally practiced by men? While women did take part in yoga, it was not the social norm that it is today. When we think of yoga today many of us see it as a “female” dominated why of connecting mind, body, and spirit and still, in many places, men are not seen as regular practitioners. With many topics of today, we need to hear all voices in the conversation and see the whole community represented in the picture. That is why we are offering “Just for Men: An Intro to Yoga.”

This class will offer men a safe space to explore the foundations of yoga, ask questions, and learn supportive postures and breathwork that will increase mobility, flexibility, and balance. Join Chele (@belgradeblessed)for this 5-week series and open up to new understandings of this ancient practice. Series begins Wednesday, October 23rd at 6:00 PM.
