So proud of the whole team today! Whatever the results, everybody displayed great jiujitsu — and the results were impressive. LJ won 🥇 🥇 in gi and nogi, and also took 🥈 in nogi absolute. Herbert earned 🥇 in gi and 🥈 nogi, and Griffin took one 🥈 and one 🥉— and by the way, this was Griffin’s first tournament and blue belt and LJ’s first competition at purple belt. Riley performed well in his two matches, fighting up in weight and belt level, and Michal made his return to the competition mats as well. Huge congratulations to everyone who competed — it always yields valuable insights for improvement — and huge thanks to Tony, Pat and Kelsey for coaching. It’s gratifying for all the instructors to see everyone improve, and watching folks’ hard work pay off on the mats fills everyone with pride.

Seven years of Bellingham BJJ downtown.

Seven is a number that human cultures have ascribed magical properties to for a long time. The Mesopotamians gave it mystical significance in 22nd century BCE. The Pythagoreans thought it had spiritual properties. It’s still the most likely number to be called people’s favorite number throughout western culture.

Know what’s magic to me? That we get to wake up every day and train. That almost 2,000 people have started their journey with us. And that almost everyone in this photo — which is of our very first class in the downtown space, May 1, 2019 — is still training, either here or the other places in the world they moved.

Whether you’re a day one person that’s still here, like .thompson .odonovan Matt or Derek; whether you got your start here but train elsewhere; whether you moved around the world to train and teach at other spots like Sean, Neto, or Tony; whether you tried it and are taking a break, or whether you just gave it a shot, thank you for sharing these mats with us.

We’ve got covers on them now 😜.

Here’s to the next seven years. Come celebrate.

Tony taught gold lasso techniques last night, and we worked more on open guard. If you missed out, come on in tonight … especially because it’s your last chance to train with Pete McGregor until June! He’ll be back for Gi To Sea, but come in tonight and you won’t regret it. See you there.

Every time Niamh from visits, we learn great new technique. This time, Jeff and Niamh team-taught a class about omoplata in the 🥋 when your partner stands to pass. Whether you were a first time omoplatist or a practiced shoulder and wristlocker, hopefully you had as much fun as we did.

Guard week rolls on tonight in nogi!

TONIGHT: shows how to use the gi to slow your partner down when they stand to pass. You’ll be so efficient it’ll look like you’re moving at speed while they’re standing still.

ONE WEEK FROM TONIGHT: Our new Intro To BJJ session starts! We’ve been running fun, high quality introductory cohorts for beginners downtown for almost 7 full years (uh, wow), and these are great opportunities to try jiujitsu in a safe, friendly environment. Still a few spots left!

04/25/2026

Jiujitsu improves your technique, strength and flexibility early on. You don’t get the ESP that allows you to no-look dodge wrestlers doing cartwheel passes until black belt.

Keep training! The skills are worth it.
