I’m looking forward to having a booth again this year at the Rhubarb Festival in LaPine, OR. It was really fun last year!

🤠 I just had a reorder of these Black and Blue Leeches. This repeat buyer says he has been out fishing everybody with these, getting 30 fish a day at Chickahominy. He also said at Diamond Lake last year he landed 70 fish, before the fly fell apart. Thanks for the report, Philip!

The Balanced Leech Olive with an orange bead is the best producing fly I’ve found on Haystack and Chickahominy Reservoirs. I just tied up 2 dozen for a friend. I’ll be heading there next week.

🎣 Pat’s Flies are made especially for the Cascade Lakes and Rivers.

Maybe you have a fly you want copied?
I can do that.

Any number, any fly, at any time.
A box of 12 proven winners sells for $30.
Flies also sell @ 2.50 a fly. I have balanced leeches, calabaetis, and Fall River flies.
Hit me up!

My fly tying desk lies directly behind these doors in the guest room. I built it right after we moved into our home in Bend. The desk drawers have been redesigned and refinished by me. They previously spent 50 years as my parent's bedside tables in Tulelake. I built the wooden mini-drawer chest on the desk and it hides lots of materials. Kathy likes that the room can be ready for company in an instant when I just close the doors.

This vase full of feathers above my tying desk was gifted to me. As I understand it, this type of feather is from a Lady Amherst Pheasant from Southeast Asia. It is primarily used to make exquisite salmon flies, as far as I can tell. Kathy and I were curious about the bird that produced such colorful feathers and found these pictures. So, that’s about all I know about them, but they sure make a pretty vase of feathers.

Winter fishing — Pat's Flies 01/24/2026

🎣 🥶 This article I wrote from 2025 was written about this time last year. This year’s recent cold spell has kept me indoors tying flies the past week or two. I’m tying some flies for Fall River, putting together a 12 pack of my most recent favorites: 2 each of the following:
No-see-um, OBO (Ought to Be Outlawed), Guide’s Choice Hairs Ear, Rainbow Warrior, Split Back PMD (Pale Morning Dun) and the Magic Egg.

Winter fishing — Pat's Flies One of the great things about the Fall River in Central Oregon is that it stays open to fly fishing all year long. There are a lot of fish in the river throughout the winter. You will not run into the crowds you might see in the summer, too. Everyday there will be a Blue Wing Olive hatch, around noo

🎣🤠Come Meet the Sunriver Anglers at SHARC

The Sunriver Anglers are inviting anyone interested in fly fishing to our annual Pie and Tie meeting.
This is a social meeting in which we invite a few of our best fly tyers to tie their favorite flies while the rest of us eat pie, watch and chat.

We will have information on places to fish, fishing regulations, and Sunriver Angler projects, meetings and outings. We love to share fish stories.

This year we are adding a swap in which members can bring a few items to swap, barter, sell or give away.

Cost to attend is free.

Our tentative list of guest tyers include Pat Chambers, Phil Fischer, Steve Lichtenberger, John Olschewsky and Steve Savill. It is truly an honor to host this incredible line up.

Pie and Tie will be held at SHARC (Sunriver Homeowners Aquatics and Recreation Center) on Wednesday, February 4th 4:30-5:30pm. Doors open at 4:15. Bring a few bucks for our monthly bucket raffle and the swap! For more information, please visit

🎣Here is my favorite collection of East Lake Callibaetis Flies. I’m also tying a collection of 12 flies for Crane Prairie and Fall River. They come as a set of a dozen.

I’ll be tying at the Sunriver Anglers meeting February 4 at 4:30 @ SHARC. The public is invited to this annual Tie & Pie event. It’s lots of fun.

🎣 I am beginning to gear up for the Callibaetis hatch on East Lake. This fly is an extended-body, loop-wing hackle-stacker, with a foam thorax.

The East Lake Callibaetis Hatch begins late June or early July. It extends through September. On a good day, with very little wind and the temperature just right, it can be some of the best top-water fishing around.

I above fly is a Bob Quigly pattern. I also tie the Quigly Cripple and Film Critic, also good choices to catch a lot of fish.

But my favorite Callibaetis imitation is one that I call The Manzanita Callibaetis. I was shown this fly 30 years ago while fishing on Manzanita Lake in Lassen Park, CA.
