One page or two. One column or two. Which font.

I spent so long on those and they were the wrong questions.

A resume that actually works has three things in it.

A value proposition. Not your job title. What someone gets when they hire you.

Social proof. A line from a review, a quote from a manager, an award. Someone other than you saying you're good at this.

Impact. Not what you were responsible for. What changed because you were there.

Get those three right and the layout barely matters.

Get them wrong and no amount of column work saves it.

I know this because I was the designer absolutely certain the design was the problem. It wasn't. The argument was.

P.S. Which of the three is thinnest on yours right now?

A friend of mine paid fifteen hundred dollars for a resume.

She showed it to me and it was a plain Word document. Default fonts. No color. Nothing.

I'd been a designer my whole career. My own resumes were beautiful, custom layouts, considered type, the whole thing. And they'd gotten me nowhere, but I didn't know that was connected yet.

My first thought was that she'd been robbed.

Then I read it.

It opened with a headline that made clear she was more than her job title. A summary that set up everything under it. A short quote from a manager. Then her skills, laid out like product features.

It wasn't a document. It was a campaign. And the product was her.

She was interviewing at Uber and Netflix within a few weeks.

Most resumes are written like a history. Here's where I worked, here's what I was responsible for, in order. That's a record, and records are for filing.

Hers was a pitch.

The formatting was never the thing.

P.S. Is yours a record or a pitch?

When an interviewer says "tell me about a time when," they want a real story.

A lot of people answer with what they usually do instead. "When I have a difficult customer, I do X, Y, and Z." It sounds fine. But as a hiring manager, it doesn't prove anything to me.

Pick one real moment. That is the proof.

You would never make a big purchase without reading the reviews first. A hiring manager feels the same way about you.

A wrong hire costs time and money, and it can put their own job at risk. So they need a reason to trust you before you ever meet.

A testimonial on your resume gives them one. Who would you ask to write yours?

Check out my upcoming workshop to work through it with me.
