Shooting workout with . Shot variability, footwork efficiency and deceleration and a unique shooting challenge in between drills.

Clip 1: CASH/HIGH/LOW. Using the Noah Basketball shooting system to identify arc, the rebounder calls out “CASH”, “HIGHER” or “LOWER”. To accomplish a “CASH” request, the shooter must make a shot with 43-47 angle of entry (confirmed by NOAH) AND trigger the “cha-ching” sound by also having a depth of 8-15 inches and left/right variability of 2 inches or less from the dead center of the rim. A simple make will not cut it - the shot must be PERFECT to trigger the “cha-ching”. Player gets 3 attempts to “CASH” to keep drill going. “HIGHER” calls for the shooter to deliberately shoot at an arc of 48 degrees or higher - must be done on the first request to keep drill going. “LOWER” calls for the shooter to deliberately shoot at an arc of 42 degrees or lower - must be done on the first request to keep drill going. Goal is to “stay alive” in the drill for 5 min or longer (easily accomplished by Layla for all 4 rounds during this workout). To get to 5 min or more requires a level of shot control that is MUCH harder than you think!

Clip 2: NEXUS SHOOTING. A quick, fun shooting drill where a player makes a shot on all five of our baskets from the same spot (the “NEXUS” or center/hub spot).

Clip 3: REACTION REPS. Partner holds ball above shoulders and drops the ball straight down in front of the shooter. Shooter cannot touch the ball until the partner either allows the ball to bounce twice (shooter can grab and shoot on second bounce), partner provides drive left/right signal (tilting hips or shoulders) or steps backward (triggering immediate catch and shoot). Working on variability (nothing scripted, no pattern to memorize, must perceive and react to environmental cues) and specific footwork (in this case, explosiveness off 1 dribble with deceleration into a pull-up jump shot).

Cannot wait for the coming winter to see all the work this warrior has put into this summer…

ABC cutting concepts from our work with a group of middle school girls from Columbus, Montana.

While the ABC concept allows for continuity, it is designed to create paint/basket attacks on every pass, cut and catch. ABC is built on an understanding of spacing, creating 2-gaps and knowing that a defender can only defend a 2-gap cut in three ways (A = AHEAD/denial , B = BEHIND/chase, C = CONCEDE/allow catch to stop cuts). Reading an A or B defender triggers a basket cut. Reading a C defender triggers a catch and counter-attack (catch moving left = rip drive right or vice versa).

Constraints: Players were NOT allowed to screen or duet in any way. Players were not allowed to stop cuts or retreat back to starting position. Players were not allowed to catch the ball without looking to score.

Our popular SSG Academies are back and open for early registration on the MHC app and at mhcbasketball.com! High school boys will be given the first opportunity, starting September 2nd and running through October 7th.

MHC academies are MORE than just 3x3. Each week introduces new concepts and decision-making environments to players. Players compete with and against ALL members of their academy class. All academies will feature 5 weeks of training and competition based on small sided games (SSGs). Each academy is made up of 10 sessions and is limited to 12 players. Sessions will run on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Mondays, players will learn a specific small sided game (2-Gap, Grind, The Bear, Frozen, Sandwich, etc.). On Wednesdays, players will compete against each other, following the rules and concepts learned in the first session. Players will work with different teammates each week, but records will be kept according to individual player “win shares”. Parents and family members are encouraged to observe the competitive sessions on Wednesdays.

Last year all of our academies SOLD OUT. Academies for High School Girls, Middle School Boys and Middle School girls will be posted soon! Register now by using the MHC app or going to mhcbasketball.com.

1v1+1 and 2v2 “Get” progressions.

Video 1: 1v1 entry to +1 player positioned in elbow area. After completing pass to the elbow (+1), offensive player executes “Get” action.

Constraints: Only the original passer is eligible to score. +1 player can only receive and deliver passes. Possession ends after one shot attempt or immediately upon a turnover (including the entry pass to +1). Both sides of the floor are active and must take into account the opposite group when making decisions on when and where to cut. We want players navigating random bodies and chaos - just as they would in a game.

Video 2: 2v2. Both offensive players are live. Both defensive players are live.

Constraints: Ball must be entered to the elbow area before an offensive attack or shot can be attempted (second possession in this clip is a violation of this constraint and was deemed a turnover). Once the ball is entered, offense executes a “Get” and court is unlocked and live until a score or change of possession.

Ball screen SSG progressions.

2v1, stationary “sandwich” starts. Offense starts with options to drive/attack left or right. We want quick attacks and reads to create a shot in a 3-5 second window. 1 shot and rep is done. Out of the offensive “Duet” we want one player to pressure the rim and one player to provide patience and space. Since it is 2v1 we encourage straight line attacks and decisions. Score the ball “on the move”. Creative passing encouraged. Offensive players learn to “communicate” based on the angle of the driver and how well the driver “absorbs” the defender and leaves space for the other player in the duet.

Progress to 2v2 and allow continuity into a second ball screen of initial stationary start does not generate a gold or silver medal shot.
