IMPORTANT UPDATE ABOUT THE 2023 MAGIC CITY HALF MARATHON & 5K - PLEASE READ

We have recently been informed by the Birmingham Police Department that due to a shortage of officers we have to alter our 2023 Half Marathon & 5K routes. This change will be updated to the event website course maps later today.

While we are disappointed to have to make a change to our routes this close to the event we must do so in an effort to keep the event safe and within the limits set upon us by Birmingham Police with regards to the number of officers available to work the event. This change will mean the following:

1. The Marathon Project (26.2 mile event) will be cancelled. We have no option here. We can not get the needed distance needed while keeping the entire event within the half marathon route and with such short notice we can not certify the route. While we could get the distance "close", this event was intended to provide an option for those wanting to race a certified distance a chance for a qualifying time. Without a USAT&F certification we can not expect our registered athletes to put forth such effort and not be rewarded for it. All Marathon Project athletes will be refunded in full and will be offered a free entry into the half marathon distance. If you are registered for the Marathon Project you will receive a second email on how to claim a half marathon entry.

2. The Half Marathon route will still begin and end at Regions Field with the finish on the field as normal. The bulk of the route will be along 1st Ave S and will still be 2 loops. The route will still be flat and fast and will eliminate the return stretch along 5th Ave S with athletes running out and back on 1st Ave S with a line of cones down the middle of the roadway to separate runners going out and coming back. While this is obviously not our first choice, it is the best option available to us.

3. The 5K will also be mostly on 1st Ave S with a start and finish at Regions Field as normal.

4. Finally, we regret to say this will be the final edition of the Magic City Half Marathon & 5K. With the restraints placed upon the race by Birmingham Police due to their limited staffing options, we have no choice but to end our great run in the city of Birmingham. We have loved hosting this event. We have loved running in downtown Birmingham. We just love this race. We are heartbroken by this and it is our only option as any events longer than a 5K will not be allowed in downtown Birmingham for the foreseeable future. We are happy to be able to offer you all one last Magic City Half Marathon & 5K in 2023 and we look forward to welcoming you to the finish line on Regions Field one last time. Thank you all for being a part of this race. We have loved every minute of it. Now, let's have a great day on November 19th. It's been one hell of a run.

Permitting has begun for the 2022 Magic City Half Marathon & 5K. Look for a revised run course for the half marathon which will eliminate the big hill found on the back half of the course making for an even faster event. With less than 600 feet of TOTAL elevation gain over the entire 13.1 mile route (that's less than 45 feet per mile) this will be the fastest Magic City route yet!
