So the opposite is also true: Greatness is a steady pour - unbridled and unending in its willingness to pay attention and remind others what we see. Lavishing it when it’s least expected. Showering the girl you think has it all together. Appreciating outside our initial thanks for the ones who give day in and out. Who can you pour it out for today?

Our amazement does little when kept to ourselves. ⁣

•⁣

Who knows what seeds of greatness are buried in the human in front of us? What’s sitting dormant that they haven’t uncovered yet? ⁣

What creativity, what kindness, what awareness to their own greatness they simply don’t see? What profound innovation, what athletic magic, what compassionate service, what mind-marking words are there in the soil of potential, waiting to be called up?⁣

•⁣

My dad is a realist. Optimism is my mom’s strong suit, not his. His critical eye is world class at seeing things can be improved, what could use some correcting, etc. A true enneagram one through and through. ⁣

•⁣

But his willingness to affirm his girls - mom included - never ceased. On days when I’d come home from dance late or mornings when he had packed my lunch, I still remember finding his words. ⁣

Post it size notes with his cursive scribbled out. Nothing lengthy or elaborate - just a few sentences reminding me of what he saw.⁣

Through his eyes - I was smart, hard working, had far more inside me than the world knew yet; to him I was beautiful, articulate, and constantly astounding him with new ways of seeing the world. Whether or not I or anyone else saw it, He did - and would readily tell me so. And from a guy whose opinion was hard won, it meant the world. ⁣

Sprinkled through out memories of track meets where I’d failed, soccer games I’d missed the winning shot, 7th grade puddles of tears and hormones, are memories of the notes he wrote. And I kept. Still keep. ⁣

•⁣

Pulling out the potential of those right in front of us is process we may or may not even know we are in. My deep love for all things handwritten came from this guy. My appreciation for the word and it’s power and the gift we have in affirming the greatness we see in others. So many things I owe to his steadfast capacity to affirm and build into his girls. ⁣

As he rounds the corner of another year tomorrow, I’m counting the seeds He’s cultivated - praising God for his willingness to recognize his own amazement and name it for the people right in front of him. ⁣

Last week, a team of us from lululemon got together to write a stack of RAG notes to local healthcare workers here in Birmingham. SUCH an incredible way to spend a few hours, exercising our own muscles of gratitude for some of those who deserve it most. ⁣

What’s fantastic to me is watching how much the givers of gratitude actually GET in their giving. It’s one thing to know the adage it’s better to give than to receive - but it’s another thing to put it into action and taste its life-giving effects. I’m honestly not sure who receives more - the writers or the receivers. ⁣

•⁣

With a list of one hundred names, we had the chance to write specific notes to individuals on each of the local teams we’d connected with. And honestly, that’s where the gold of gratitude really is: specificity. Naming particular things we appreciate, calling out seeds of greatness, recognizing why someone is worthy of celebrating in the ordinary minutes of an average day. ⁣

Even in not knowing this crew personally, we know their bravery. Their courage. Their willingness to be agile in a season like this, and to sacrifice even more than usually do on an average life-saving day in their role. Recognizing their heroism, by name, is an easy gift to give. ⁣

•⁣

We teamed up with and to bring the best coffee in town to these guys too. And we’ll actually be working with them to offer another time for curbside RAG writing this coming week! Keep your eyes peeled. ⁣

RAG | Gratitude is not a matter of circumstance, but if focus. It’s a muscle. It grows the moment we pause to name and thank the people, spaces, moments happening right in front of us | Good luck to all of you running the Wine 10k! And don’t forget to BRAG on someone before the day is out |

GRATITUDE & Growth || One of the ways I love to kick off the year in review process is this !! Looking back on the year categorically ( physical, mental, social, spiritual, professional, vocational, relational, financial, recreational) and asking two questions: • What am I grateful for? What was good - whole - complete - difficult but beneficial? Acknowledging God for the unexpected - giving thanks for things I have forgotten | • How do I want to grow in each area this year? What do I want to improve in? Press into? Cultivate habits around? |

Sitting down to start the process for myself - which might honestly be one of my favorite rhythms e.v.e.r - already overwhelmed at the crazy number of unexpected gifts of 2018...

We best cultivate the capacity to hear in times of stillness. In the making of the man (Lincoln), the element of silence was immense.

On sabbath, we are called to carve out time and treat it with an extra measure of reverence, to live in it with a higher degree of attentiveness.

The paradox of it all: if we don’t listen, we never enter God’s rest. Yet, if we don’t enter his rest, we never listen ...

Gratitude for the seemingly insignificant is a seed that plants a giant miracle. Do not disdain the small - the whole of life - even the hard - is made up of the minute parts. And if I miss the infinitesimals, I miss the whole | Ann Voskamp
