"Amid a circle of tents inside the Cavalier were school exhibits on how to strive for a better world. Among them were the effects of child abuse, by Northridge Middle School. How to encourage weight loss through mood-color creating exercycles, by Nobel Charter Middle School. Or how to lob emergency supplies to those trapped in earthquake rubble, by Portola Middle School.
That’s where Joey Clapkin and Alex Shinkeyev stood over their 6-foot crossbow, which aims to fire canisters containing masks, medicines and water 150 feet into collapsed buildings. The idea, they said, was inspired by recent earthquake devastation in Italy.
“When there’s an earthquake, and there’s no energy,” said Clapkin, 13, of Tarzana, of the 2,500-year-old technology, “you can use this.”"
