Playing today in the ALCS are the two most recent teams to have a name change without a location change. Prior to this pair, do you know the last team to change it's name?

A 154-game season would change the stat books too!
The schedule change gets the headlines, but scorekeepers should look at OBR 9.22. To qualify for a batting title, a hitter needs 3.1 plate appearances for every scheduled team game, and a pitcher needs 1 inning per game for an ERA title. At 162 games, that's 502 PA and 162 IP. At 154, it drops to about 477 PA and 154 IP. It also brings back the old asterisk debate: before 1961, the season was 154 games. Should a 154-game record count the same as a 162-game one?

A "home run" that became a double: Looking back at the Yankees' game-tying homer became an RBI double: OBR 6.01(e) covers this. When a spectator interferes with a batted ball, the ball is dead at the moment of interference, and the umpires award whatever bases they judge would have happened without it. Last night that meant two decisions. First, the replay crew decided the ball wouldn't have cleared the wall. Second, they had to place the runners. Lombard scored from first, and Volpe was held to second. For scorekeepers, you score what the umpires award: a double and one RBI, not a home run. Even Rays manager Kevin Cash, whose team benefited, said the runner placement was a judgment call. Would you have sent Volpe to third?

Players are winning two-thirds of their ABS challenges in October!
For a century, OBR 8.02(a) said a ball/strike call was a judgment call and final. The ABS challenge system changed that. Only the batter, pitcher, or catcher can challenge, and a team keeps the challenge if it wins. In the playoffs, players are winning 67% of challenges, up from 54% in the regular season. That's partly because they're choosing more carefully, and partly because a lost challenge costs more in October. Scorebook note: an overturned pitch simply changes the count, so record the corrected call, not the umpire's original one.
