Sidekicks getting it done!!!!
With an unbelievably heavy heart that’s so hard to lighten, I will give it my best shot. We’ve been struck with so much bad news lately. Unfortunately we lost a pro staff and family member Dana Bonney yesterday. A Captain and Pro Staff member that’s been with us for close to 20 years. Trying to come up with words again seem difficult! We hope fishing up there with others we’ve lost way too soon like Terry Weber, Joe Toomey, Shannon Bissell, Doug Strzynski, Joe Maltese, Paul Czarnecki, and other’s that have shaped the way we fish in the Great Lakes. They were leaders and teachers. We hope to stay here long enough as we have more to learn and you guys can battle it out, laugh, and keep learning up there in the sky! Save some for us when we get there. Without you we need all the help we can get. Please keep Dana’s family in your prayers!

With shoreline on four out of five Great Lakes and numerous inland fisheries, recreational fishing in Michigan is a favorite pastime enjoyed by over 2.7 million anglers. Recreational fishing is also an economic driver in the state as Michigan boasts a $3.7 billion recreational fishing economy which creates 27,979 jobs. Commercial fishing and restaurant interests are putting a lot of pressure on State Legislature to pass these bills and endanger sportfish populations. Its critically important for Michigan’s recreational fisheries that the State Legislature does not pass these bills and hearing from businesses like yours would go a long way.
If you would like to be included on the letter, please simply reply to me by COB on Friday, September 8.
Thanks for your consideration! - Chad

Dear Chairman Howell and Chairman McBroom,
As businesses that are part of Michigan’s $3.7 billion recreational fishing economy, we are writing today to express concern with proposed legislation that will threaten Michigan’s renowned sport fisheries and the many communities who rely on them. We kindly ask that when considering SB 389 and HB 4790 – companion bills to allow the harvest of lake trout, yellow perch, walleye and other game fish for commercial fishing operations – you keep in mind the legacy of sportfishing in Michigan and the negative impact increased commercial quotas on sportfish populations will have for recreational anglers throughout our state.
Recreational fishing is one of Michigan’s most popular outdoor activities, and the state ranks as one of the top five states in the country in number of anglers and economic expenditures. Michigan anglers are a major driver of the state’s outdoor recreation economy, with 2,716,157 anglers generating $3.7 billion in economic output, supporting 27,979 jobs. In addition, recreational fishermen and the industry contribute substantially to conservation through fishing license fees and the excise tax on fishing equipment. Without these user-generated funds, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources would be unable to successfully manage our fisheries resources for the benefit of the public.
Compared to the state’s substantial recreational fishing industry, currently there are only 19 licensed commercial fishing operations in the state. In 2015, commercial harvest of whitefish was valued at $4.7 million. While commercial fishing is part of Michigan’s heritage and culture, it is not worth risking the future of sportfishing in the state by allowing increased commercial exploitation of our fisheries resources.
Instead of considering SB 389 and HB 4790 we ask that you pass HB 4569, HB 4567 and HB 4568. These bills help to ensure that state-licensed commercial fishing operations are held responsible for the harvest and selling of game fish and require them to report the location of their nets. Updating these commercial fishing regulations and keeping sought-after gamefish protected is imperative for the future of Michigan’s fisheries resources and all who depend on them.
We thank you for your time and consideration of this request.
Sincerely,
Cc: Members, House Committee on Natural Resources and Outdoor Education
Members, Senate
