Putting together another sample Tall Tale frame for a pal to ride. The pre-order for production is opening Friday!
Also check out the matching Helm forks we will have available from . My personal favorite.
Friday 9AM.

My philosophy around mountain bike design is informed by the last 12 years of building custom mountain bikes. In that time I have designed and built hundreds. Though I didn’t realize it at the time, having the intimate conversations involved with custom bike clientele about what they wanted in a bike was the best education I could have hoped for before designing a production bike. Questions like “what do you like and what would you change about your current bike?” or “what kind of riding are you trying to do?” can tell you a lot about what people are looking for. Even for the bikes I didn’t build I have had thousands of people ask me for something they couldn’t find off the shelf. Being able to listen to them was invaluable. Through the years I was able to see those conversations turn into similar numbers on a geometry chart and eventually an aesthetic on a bike. A different recipe or variation for different needs but mostly made of the same ingredients.
The pre-order for the first run of Tall Tale mountain Joe frames opens next Friday 3/29 at 9AM PST. Read all about this bike on the blog and see all the specs etc on the product page at

One thing that has been driving me crazy on the bike internet is people declaring that “gravel bikes are just 90’s mountain bikes”. Claiming to get the same experience from a 30 year old bike built with far less technology than we have readily available today. I applaud these people. Fixing up and modifying old bikes to be more fun and modern is how I got in to bikes in the first place. The “Performance Basket Jammer” name is meant to evoke those feelings you’ve had on your old be**er basket bike. A new cutty trail you found on your commute. A long unplanned hill climb to a sunset vista because what the heck you’re already out on your bike. Those moments are what it is all about. Even until a few weeks ago I was commuting on a 1994 Panasonic MTB with 26” wheels and canti brakes (recently replaced with a SuperSomething). I loved that thing and it took me to some great places, but every time I hopped back on one of my modern bikes I was blown away by how much better they felt. Disc brakes rule. Bigger wheels are faster and more comfortable. Modern tubing is lighter and rides better. These two eras of bikes, steel bikes, are on totally different planets.
Full rant and some photos of Brian’s PBJ are in the blog at this one is from a batch of four built at my shop in Oakland this winter and it’s staying right here in the bay! Such a great bike for the mixed terrain we have out here.

Current status on my personal SuperSomething build.
I built up this 60CM frameset in June for a big bike tour and loved it so much that I have been riding it since. I am finding that I would like a bit more traditional fit for a lot of the bay area riding though, so This one is going to get switched over to commuter duty and I am going back to 42c tires, narrower bars and a 58CM frame. I do think this Maxxis pace is an underrated tire though and I love how simple and reliable this build has been.

I bailed on sleeping outside but my bike sure looked cool carrying all the stuff around.

Shop camera process pics from this last small batch of PBJ’s. I think it is fun to document the process. The next small batch of me-made frames will be Ti SuperSomethings this Summer. Send me an email if you are interested in one of those, I currently have two spots left ;)

Completes! We’ve got ‘em!
Since the launch of the SuperSomething last year we have received many questions around complete bikes. After building up a whole bunch we have settled on some things we like and some things you like and to make the whole process easier we are launching four easy to choose from complete build kits today. Check them out (with pricing) on the SuperSomething page at
Each of these bikes is lovingly assembled by the meticulous hands of one at a time in Bozeman, MT. It was fun picking out build kits that we really like and would recommend to our friends and family. If they are not exactly your cup of tea then we are happy to swap out bars and saddles or tires, things like that. Shoot us an email, we are humans at our tiny little bike company and we are here to talk.
OK happy Friday!

There is no fork that rides like a nice steel fork. This last batch of PBJ’s got some forks that I am pretty excited about. When I introduced the PBJ three years ago I offered a carbon fork as an option because it saved me a lot of time on fabrication and it allowed me to get bikes to customers faster. When I decided to try a carbon fork on my own PBJ it changed the ride from a fun and playful into something harsh and uninspiring. Sure it saves you half a pound, but you really sacrifice the entire ride quality of a nicely built bike and to me that tradeoff isn’t worth it. We all get to make choices on our bikes though and some people like different things than me. Not trying to yuck your yum but IMO if you want a rigid bike that is fun to ride you should have a steel fork on it and that is why I design Sklar Bikes that way.
Anyhow These forks turned out really cool. 1-1/8” bent tube crowns to keep them off-road capable and robust with 1” blades for that hood flex. 1-1/8” steer tube keeps things light, not too stiff, and BMX style dropouts for fun with a 180mm post mount that I finally designed and had machined after years of chopping and welding them together myself.
Production PBJ’s coming end of this year or early next? Firm timeline TBD but it is in the works. Maybe I will do another small run before then. Let me know if you are interested.

First wheel checks in the new studio. After doing hundreds of these it is still a nice feeling when the tubes are all stuck together and it starts to look like a bike.

I have been building out a new studio to make bike frames in for the last few weeks and today I got it pretty much ready to go so I went on a bike ride to celebrate. It is so nice here. Scroll for some studio sneak peeks 👉🏻

A few announcements below👇
Kyle stopped by to pick up his new SuperSomething build recently and there is something so nice about black on yellow. Love the way this sweet flat bar build turned out and it is staying in Bozeman! What a sweet bike for exploring all the spots.
Shipping department update - We are taking a little family time and doing some reorganization in the shipping zone, so shipping is on pause for a moment and will continue the first full week of December. Thanks for your patience!
Black Friday - I have been getting a lot of questions about whether we will be offering any deals for Black Friday and the answer is no. Many years ago I made the decision not to offer discounts and I am going to keep sticking with that. It means a lot to have your support for our little tiny company, especially when big brands are blowing things out. I totally get it and I there with you getting sweet deals on some new tools for the shop and things. There are so many good folks out there making thoughtful things through their small brands though. I hope you’ll join me in trying to support those as much as we can.
OK that is all for now, thanks for reading!

Some details on Bob’s new SuperSomething build 💅

Photos from Sklar Bikes's post 11/04/2023

This SuperSomething complete for Ferdinand is off to Los Angeles!
For a city of its’ size and especially its reputation as a car city, LA sure has some fun riding. I have been fortunate to experience a lot of it myself visiting over the years, so it was fun to build up a bike for those fire roads, trails and big ole hills.
Ferdinand was looking for a mechanical build with no hydraulics and lots of American made parts and that is what he got. We went with the classic Sram rival drivetrain paired with cranks, headset and hubs from .We have been specing the Outback wheelset on so many of these SuperSomethings. If you want a quality wheelset with nice hubs that will last forever that is what we would recommend. Also they are quick and easy to get and made by some of the nicest people in the bike industry. What is not to love?

Of course the brakes are Klampers from and I'm a little excited to see this Vittoria tire on here, seems like a cool one. And finally a seatpost and stem from .

All in all this is a great low-maintenance build with really nice things that will last a long time. Ride your bike, put it away, maybe l**e the chain between rides and turn your pads in every now and then, but a bike like this lets you focus on getting out there and forget the rest.
Read all about it and learn more about the SuperSomething at
Also if you are in the Los Angeles area has some framesets in stock. Stop on by to check them out.

New bike day for a few weeks back. This SuperSomething build by turned out so so sweet.
