We have a new website!

Home - Brambleton Bettas In preparation for registration for existing members on 2 March, we wanted to let you know that this offseason the Bettas, and the entire ODSL league, migrated to a new website. We will no longer be using TeamUnify and have instead migrated to Swimtopia.

We are very pleased to announce the hiring of Coach Shannon McConagha as the Bettas’ Head Coach! Coach Shannon is currently coaching for Nation’s Capital Swim Club. She has been a lifelong swimmer, competing locally before attending The University of Mary Washington where she continued swimming and became a valuable part of the team. She has several years of coaching experience, dating back to the Solotar Swim Team, and has worked with swimmers ranging from beginners to Olympic Trials qualifiers. Coach Shannon also served as Head Coach of the ODSL Broadlands Piranhas and as Assistant Head Coach of the Willowsford Waves. We are thrilled that Coach Shannon will be bringing her experience to the Bettas.

We also want to express our gratitude to Coach Meredith for her years dedicated to the Bettas both as a swimmer and as Coach. We wish her the VERY BEST as she begins her teaching career. Her students will be lucky kids!

Looking forward to a great 2024 season!

Senior Spotlight: Kailey Smith

Kailey joined the Bettas only four years ago, but she is thrilled to cap off her swim experiences with such a fantastic team with many treasured memories. As a military-connected kid, she started her swim career at the age of 6 on the US Coast Guard Dolphins Swim Team. Since then, she has been a member of nine different swim teams including summer swim, club, and high school teams due to frequent moves. Her favorite Bettas memories are swimming with and coaching her younger brothers Owen and Ollie, being a member of the record breaking relay team, and leading Betta cheers at meets. Kailey will be attending Otterbein University this fall, majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Alden has been a member of the Betta Swim Team since she was 4 years old. She has loved every minute of her Betta summers. The Bettas have been like a family for Alden and she has made many close friends over the years. She has been a coach for the last four years and loves seeing the little Bettas during the summer. Alden was a member of the Independence High School team where she was a 3 time State Champion and also swam year around for Arlington Aquatic Club. Her favorite strokes are backstroke and butterfly. Her favorite Betta memories are from the Annual Purple and Black parties. She loves everything to do with the water and the ocean! You will find her surfing, snorkeling, or diving every chance she gets. Alden will be continuing her swimming career at the University of South Carolina where she will be studying Marine Science.

Reminder from ODSL:

The Old Dominion Swim League (comprised of your 30 team representatives) voted earlier this year on a rule to not allow technical swim suits for any of our meets, dual or championship for all ages. This was done to even the playing field from a financial point of view. We also feel that to young developing swimmers and summer league swimming, tech suits, which are a coaching tool, are not needed.

A Technical Suit is one that has the following components:
a. Any suit with any bonded or taped seams regardless of its fabric or silhouette; or

b. Any suit with woven fabric extending past the hips.

(Note: WOVEN FABRIC-A suit with woven fabric and sewn seams that does not extend below the hips is permitted.)
(Note: KNIT FABRIC-A suit with knit fabric and sewn seams not extending below the knees is permitted.)

Speedo Aquablades (not extending beyond the hips for girls) are allowed for all swimmers.

We will be proactively monitoring suit selections at Divisional meets and All Stars.

Senior Spotlight - Wade Weston

Wade Weston has been a Brambleton Betta for 12 years. He became a year round swimmer soon after his first year and has enjoyed competing at travel meets like States and NCSA’s. He has held several Betta individual and relay records throughout the years and has enjoyed the friendships and friendly competition he has with his peers. He will be attending Villanova University in the fall to study Computer Science and will continue swimming with their club team.

Senior Spotlight - Maggie and Drew Collier

Maggie joined the Bettas as a mini in 2010. Her favorite stroke is Breaststroke. Her time in summer swim inspired her to join her club team, NCAP, as well as swim in high school for the Indy Swim Team. In addition to her love for the water, Maggie is passionate about art! You may have seen her Betta designs on the All Star signs throughout the years. She plans to attend Savannah College of Art and Design this fall, studying sequential art.

Drew joined the Bettas in 2012 as a 7 year old. He was inspired to join the team when he saw the swimmers, his good friends, walk across the stage for the end of season awards. Whatever got him to be up there with them, he was going to do! He took his love of swimming to both NCAP and Indy High School swim teams. He became a Betta intern and worked his way up to Assistant Coach, cheering for his swimmers all along the way. Drew plans to attend Savannah College of Art and Design this fall, studying film.

Both Maggie and Drew cherish their time on the Bettas! It’s been the best experience for them, giving them confidence in and out of the pool. The friends they have made throughout the years will be friends forever. Once a Betta, always a Betta.

The Bettas would like to congratulate and thank our graduating seniors, Ella Morris, Maggie Collier, Drew Collier, Eli Wiggins, Kailey Smith, Alden Zerkle and Wade Weston. These seniors have been an integral part of this team as swimmers and coaches.

We would like to honor our seniors at our awards ceremony. If you would like to contribute, some ideas include notes from their teammates, gift cards, gas money, drawings from our youngest swimmers - anything to brighten their day would be appreciated! Bags for donations will be set out a practices this week and also at the awards ceremony on 7/22.
