Yesterday was the official ribbon cutting for the rebuilt CCC structure atop Brian Head Peak. Rebuilding it was a great accomplishment by the Forest Service, HistoriCorps, Zion Forever Project, Visit Cedar City Brian Head, Brian Head Town, and private donors (thanks!). The wind tested the new roof during the ceremony!

The trees east of Cedar Breaks towards Sydney Valley are peaking this week. Note in each of these that the old guard tall trees appear to be near end of life with few leaves, but the young troops will carry on with their legacy. There is also starting to be a good amount of color in town with peaking probably starting in another week.

The post-fire aspens decided to lead the color change this season (as seen from the Manzanita trail overlook). For scale, the bottom pic shows their growth since the 2017 fire. Now we would need at least a 12 foot snow base to ski and ride the burn areas.

These are "the" trees by Sydney Valley and how they are now. They are looking more and more old with fewer leaves each year. The young ones around their bases are looking to carry on in the future.

I was surprised to find some nice areas of color north of town (there is very little color in town). This area is best viewed from the Manzanita trail and should be really great in a week.

The annual astronomy festival has fun and educational activities throughout southern Utah.

Why did the Astronomer bring a ladder to work? Because they wanted to reach for the stars! 🌟

Well, even though we can't physically reach any stars, we can sure admire them from afar! And what better time to go stargazing than during the 2026 Southwest Astronomy Festival??

From September 11th through the 13th, experience Southwest Utah's night skies like never before with numerous astronomy programs occurring throughout the region. From here at Cedar Breaks National Monument, to Snow Canyon and Gunlock State Parks, to the Red Cliffs Desert Garden, and beyond!
