Coming full circle. â•

We couldn’t close for the season without first talking about Hole #18.

No Mini Golf course is complete without a windmill. The one you’ll find at Hole #18, holds greater significance than just its aesthetic appeal.

Shoot the Breeze: Back to the Future with Wind Energy by Alison Simko and Kate Mulhauser, displays a windmill to remind us of where we came from and where we are headed.

Windmills powered life for settlers of New Amsterdam, and the city’s seal even features 17th c. windmill blades. To meet renewable power goals, NY State is developing offshore wind farms, returning to an energy source used 400 years ago.

Today, New York State is developing offshore wind farms that will power millions of homes. Within 10 years, energy generated by wind will provide 70% of the state’s electrical power. By 2040, New York State aims to produce 100% carbon-free power, an ambitious goal achievable only with wind power. 🌬

More green, please! 🌳

Together, Julie Ember and Katie Shima built Hole #17, GREEN IT, NYC!

Did you know that 40% of NYC’s land cover is green? Trees, parks and wetlands sequester carbon, playing a critical role in meeting the city’s ambitious greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets, lessen the urban heat island effect, provide wildlife habitat, and help New Yorkers connect with nature.

Some ways to make NYC even greener: add green roofs to homes, offices, and civic buildings; support urban farming and community gardening; Request street trees; advocate for parks and green streets through participatory budgeting and calling representatives; and preserving and restoring critical natural areas, like wetlands to help mitigate storm surges and protect habitats of diverse species.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint🚊📉👣

Hole #16, Fore-ward Thinking by Engineering & Design Firm, WSP, is making us appreciate living in a city where extensive and accessible public transportation systems are all around us! Cities like ours score high on the sustainability and social equity scale in comparison to suburban and rural areas.

For example, New York City's subway system can take you to any of its 472 stations emissions-free, making it a climate-conscious choice for city dwellers.

When you can, opt for the train!

More Oysters = Healthier Waterways💙

Project, Chris Edmonds & Nat Quinn designed hole #15, ‘The Big Oyster,’ to teach us about the power of oysters.

Did you know that oysters pump water through their gills, filtering toxic particles? Though once ubiquitous in NY Harbor, they’ve nearly disappeared due to overfishing, pollution, and habitat loss.

Providing important habitat for fish, crabs, worms, and other animals, oysters are critical to better water quality.

Since 2014, Billion Oyster Project has planted 45 million oysters in the harbor, restoring 12 acres of habitat at 15 reef sites, with the help of more than 6k students and 10k volunteers.
