What do you need to give yourself permission to do or feel?

In The Catalyst Academy, my public speaking incubator for leading Women of Color, we have a monthly mindset call called, Get Ya’ Mind Right. 💭

During the call, we dive deep into the mindset barriers that are holding us back from moving forward with our goals.

Quite often in our discussions, we discover that:

✅We already know what we need to do
✅We already know who we need to be
✅We already know where we need to be

But we get caught up in feeling “ready,” and believing that we need some external validation, or permission to do what we already know.

There may never be that person, that experience, or that graduation that tells you, you are ready, or enough.

We must give the permission to ourselves. We must believe it first, for ourselves.

It’s a subtle mindset shift, that with practice, is incredibly powerful.

✨What do you need to give yourself permission to do today?

I started wearing glasses at five.

The day after I got my glasses, I walked into kindergarten with my knit hat over my eyes, hoping the kids wouldn’t notice. Glasses weren't as cool in the 80s as they are now. I heard the term four-eyed, a nickname I grew to hate. My glasses also got progressively thicker through the years, which is why when I turned 13, I got contacts (and you couldn't tell me NOTHING.) Once I got contacts, I decided I wouldn’t wear glasses publicly anymore.

Recently, I’ve fallen in love with glasses. I still wear contacts, but I started experimenting with non-prescription glasses this year. Something transformative happens to my confidence and presence when I pop on a pair of stylish frames. It also helps me express my mood and intention. It's a subtle step but so affirming as I work to show up fully in every space.

Is there a piece that helps you show up more fully? Let me know in the comments below. ⬇

In Episode 9 of , Naana Badu () shares why you should take risks and be intentional about your style. Have you listened? Check the link in the bio to listen or find it wherever you listen to podcasts.🎧

Vulnerability can be a powerful tool in public speaking, but how do you know how and what to share?

Here’s a quick guide in Part ✌️ of Vulnerability + Public Speaking
1️⃣ Vulnerability is not oversharing.
2️⃣ Vulnerability should be intentional.
3️⃣Vulnerability should NOT be manipulative.
4️⃣Vulnerability should be safe.

Vulnerability in public speaking looks like this:
➡️A personal story of triumph or failure
➡️A kernel of truth about your life
➡️A quirk about your personality
➡️Revealing what matters to you most

Have you listened to Episode 8 of Oversharing with Rhonda? Tune in, link in bio to listen.🎧

Ease. That’s my word for the year.

We are taught that difficulty is a rite of passage to success and fulfillment—even a badge of honor:

“I worked HARD, but I…”

“It was HARD, but I…”

“Thanks, it was SO HARD”

What I’m realizing is that even the use of this word keeps us from feeling the joy, presence, and benefits of the success we aim to receive.

So this year, I’m rejecting the word “hard.”

I’m rejecting the culture of “hard.”

I’m rejecting the idea that in order to grow, accomplish, learn, and thrive, things have to be “hard.”

Instead, I’m embracing ease and finding ways to inject it into every aspect of my life.

And for every goal I set for this year, I’ve included the words “with ease.”

What’s your word for the year?

Can we commit to turning off “presenter mode” in 2021?😉

Time and time again, I’ll meet clients who are vibrant, lively, naturally intriguing, and fascinating to watch. In conversation, they are bringing their whole authentic selves as they share with me their goals and how they want to grow their public speaking skills. But the moment when they begin to deliver their talk or speech, a WHOLE OTHER person shows up and they change so much about who they are:

🔹They get extra formal and serious.

🔹They dilute many aspects of their personality.

🔹They imitate mannerisms and vocal presentation styles of folks they’ve seen instead of cultivating their own.

When this happens, I often say this:

🌟Your audience wants to see YOU. They want to know YOU. They want to hear YOU.

🌟While it’s important to be aware of the unconscious behaviors we do that don’t serve us, there is no need to present a muted and fabricated version of yourself.

✨⚡️Check out my Turn off Your Presenter mode video in my IGTV for the full conversation.

☝🏾P.S. I’m launching a new program in January where we talk about all of this and more. Go to bit.ly/Rhondaslist or join the link in my bio be the first notified.
