Have you heard of the Jesus turkey? A turkey born of a virgin birth? As weird as it sounds, a female turkey can sometimes produce embryos without ever being bred by a male. It’s called parthenogenesis, basically a “virgin birth,” and while it’s rare in birds overall, turkeys are one of the best-known examples of it. Even crazier, the poults that come from it will be all males.

I had no clue about this until yesterday when Paul R. Ellsworth mentioned it in the comments, and it was fun looking into. It’s not how turkeys normally reproduce, and most of these unfertilized eggs never make it very far, but it is real and scientists have documented it for decades. So next time your with your friends and want an interesting thing to say to sound smart, tell them about the virgin-birth turkey. Who else didn’t know this until right now?
