Bushido Judo School

Bushido Judo School is one of the largest Operating Judo Schools in N.C. Founded in 1995 by now 4th Degree Black Belt, Sensei Darian Stokes, The instructors are compassionate about building the community through the philosophy of Martial Arts in teaching

We are a Non- profit organization dedicated to training individuals in the art and sport of Judo in order to develop better citizens through Discipline, Respect, Honor and good Sportsmanship

Bushido Judo School has been teaching youth and adults the virtues and discipline of Martial Arts for over 17 years, and is dedicated to insuring that the young people of our society have the opportunity to become more positive and productive members in their communities through the Martial Arts philosophy and the sport of Skateboarding. Although our non-profit status in newly formed, we have produced great young athletes over the past 14 years, including State, National, and International Champions. We are currently nurturing the dreams of some of our young students to become Olympic athletes, and professional skaters. We also sponsor children and travel monthly to Judo tournaments, seminars, Martial Arts clinics, and skateboard competitions across North Carolina, and neighboring states. We take our students to Regional and National, and International level competition in other states and plan to enter students into the Jr. Olympics, State Championships, and National Championships next year, traveling to states such as Texas, Tennessee, and possibly California. Some of our programs and events have made the local newspaper and community bulletins. We’ve even put flyers in local schools and colleges. We have come to realize that with the proper financial backing, we could reach more children and help them realize their dreams and goals. Although there are many organizations out there for our youth, there are few as passionate as we are about what we do. In order for our organization to thrive and be able to service the number of children in need of positive direction, we need your support.

Bushido at the Samurai Slam SC State Championships

Happy Birthday to Vlad and Marat

Rain or shine...nothing stopped us from our get together this weekend. we still had good food and a fun time at the lake despite the threat of thunderstorm and rain. thanks to everybody who bought all the good food and to Sensei Mike who paid for the shelter rental. I may be the backbone of Bushido but you guys are its heart and soul! if you missed out on this one, don't worry oh, I'm going to try to plan another one!!! Go Bushido!!!

Bushido at the SC State Championships

Yesterday I took a handful of students to the South Carolina State Championships. We encountered some bad weather at the start and had to pull over for a bit but that did not deter us from our goal. The road trip was incredible and bonding, and reminded me of what Bushido was all about.
Cole Hutcherson competed in the senior division for the first time. Although he did not win he was very excited about his matches and fought hard and well. He came in fourth place

Daniel P. fought in two divisions. He came out with a silver medal. 2nd place South Carolina State Champion

Egor B. Also fought in two divisions and came out with bronze. 3rd place South Carolina State Champion.
although I had only three competitors at this tournament they represented the entirety of Bushido extremely well and I couldn't be more proud of them. Of course, as far as I'm concerned oh, they are all Champions! Go Bushido!!!

[11/22/18]   Happy Thanksgiving from Bushido

We should all be thankful for the people and things that have had an impact on our lives, both good and bad, because it's what made us who we are. If we don't feel good about who we are, then we can use it and learn from it to become a better person. If we are good people then we can be grateful that it made us stronger and be there for someone else. Life can be both unforgiving and kind but if we sulk over the bad things then we should definitely be grateful for the good things. Wishing EVERYONE a Happy Thanksgiving...friend and enemy....family and stranger - Sensei Darian Stokes

Go Bushido!!!

Big congratulations to two of Bushido's resident Warriors. Josh Hinkle and Noah Forshee went to the Waynesville Judo Fall Brawl. It is unfortunate that I couldn't take a big team to this tournament as we do each year, however I know we were represented well. Noah won first place in his Junior Division and first place in his senior division. Josh won third place in the 100 kg division and third place in the 100 plus division. I am extremely proud of these two individuals as they represented our entire team at this one and did well. Whether it's two or two hundred, the heart of Bushido lives on! Go Bushido!!!

General information

Judo is many things to different people. It is a fun sport, an art, a discipline, a recreational or social activity, a fitness program, a means of self-defense or combat, and a way of life. It is all of these and more. Kodokan Judo comes to us from the fighting system of feudal Japan. Founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano, Judo is a refinement of the ancient martial art of Jujutsu. Dr. Kano studied these ancient forms and integrated what he considered to be the best of their techniques into what is now the modern sport of Judo. Judo was introduced into the Olympic Games in 1964 and is practiced by millions of people throughout the world today. People practice Judo to excel in competition, to stay in shape, to develop self-confidence, and for many other reasons. But most of all, people do Judo just for the fun of it. Judo, which is translated as the "gentle way", teaches the principle of flexibility in the application of technique. This is the flexible or efficient use of balance, leverage, and movement in the performance of Judo throws and other skills. Skill, technique and timing, rather than the use of brute strength, are the essential ingredients for success in Judo. For example, in Judo classes you may learn how to give way, rather than use force, to overcome a stronger opponent. The principles of Judo, such as "Maximum Efficiency" and "Mutual Welfare and Benefit," can also be used in our dealings with others in life. The ultimate goal in Judo is to develop yourself to the maximum extent possible, always striving for perfection, so that you can contribute something of value to the world. As in all sports, Judo has a strict set of rules that govern competition and ensures safety. For those who want to test their skills, Judo offers the opportunity for competition at all skill levels, from club and national tournaments to the Olympic Games. There are separate weight divisions for men and women, and for boys and girls. Judo is best known for it's spectacular throwing techniques but also involves considerable grappling on the ground utilizing specialized pins, control holds, arm locks, and Judo choking techniques. Judo emphasizes safety and full physical activity for top conditioning. Judo is learned on special mats for comfort and safety. Judo is unique in that all age groups can participate together in learning and practicing the sport. Judo is an inexpensive, year-round activity that appeals to people from all walks of life. Judo develops self-discipline and respect for oneself and others. Judo provides the means for learning self-confidence, concentration, and leadership skills, as well as physical coordination, power, and flexibility. As a sport that has evolved from a fighting art, it develops complete body control, fine balance, and fast reflexive action. Above all, it develops a sharp-reacting mind well-coordinated with the same kind of body. Judo training gives a person an effective self-defense system if the need arises.
