I've been a leadership coach for over 8 years now. The longer I practice, the clearer it is that sustainable change must include the body.

A regulated nervous system helps leaders make better decisions, support their teams more effectively, and withstand the stresses of work life.

A small gesture or change in posture is often a tell for something we can't verbalize yet. When a leader learns these, she identifies self-sabotage, blindspots, and other patterns that otherwise run the show.

A line of communication from the brain to the body and vice versa is a powerskill for leaders. The body holds intuition, emotional awareness, and experiential information. Leaders who are successful amidst chaos and rapid change can readily access this powerskill.

Marrying a new belief or mindset with a somatic shift helps leaders rapidly adopt them, saving hours of thought looping, stuckness, and energy loss.

I'm committed to continuously learning as a coach and building my repertoire of somatic coaching practices. I'm proud to have earned a certificate in somatic practice essentials.

Self-doubt is exhausting.

Not just emotionally. It takes up actual time and energy.

You replay the meeting.
Second-guess the decision.
Rewrite the email three times.
Wonder whether everyone else in the room knows something you don’t.

And when you’re already approaching burnout, that mental load gets even heavier.

This is Part 3 of my 4-part series on how burnout shows up in leaders, including some of the signs we don’t always recognize as burnout.

Swipe to learn a time to step away from self-doubt and into confidence.

You know that email you reread for the fourth time? The presentation you "just want to tighten up" one more time, even though it's already good?

I coach a lot of high-performing leaders who quietly believe a mistake equals failure. So "95% excellent" feels dangerous, and chasing that last 5% costs hours, energy, and headspace you don't actually have.

Here's the truth I want to invite you to sit with: you're not afraid of the mistake itself. A typo lasts two seconds. What lasts is how hard you punish yourself for it afterward.

Letting go of perfectionism is hard and requires you to change your relationship to being human. Self-compassion when you slip up. Owning mistakes out loud in front of your team, so they get permission to be human too. That's how you build a culture of learning instead of a culture of error-avoidance.

This is #2 in a series I'm running on the factors I see driving burnout in the leaders I coach, again and again. Swipe through for what perfectionism is actually costing you (and a practice to start loosening its grip).

Which slide called you out? Tell me below.

Your worth is not your work.

That sentence sounds simple. Living it is another story, especially if you're a high-achieving leader who has spent years measuring your value by output.

Here's the pattern I see over and over with my clients: great feedback = I'm the best!! Tough feedback = I'm failing. One missed deadline and suddenly you're just not enough.

Let me be very clear. Striving for excellence, having high standards, and dreaming about your goals is a great this. But when your self-worth becomes fused to your job performance... that is not something to be glorified and it's one of the quiet drivers of leadership burnout.

This is the first of four factors I see derail even the most capable leaders (you know, the ones running teams brilliantly on the outside while running on empty underneath). Over the next two weeks, I'm breaking down all four: worth tied to work, perfectionism, self-doubt spirals, and empathy without boundaries.

Swipe through for factor #1 and a simple exercise to start untangling who you are from what you produce.

Which one hits closest to home for you? I'd love to know in the comments!

On a glorious bike ride on Nantucket, my heart sank in disappointment. My husband kept riding ahead of me. When I caught up, he'd speed ahead. What the hell? We were on a romantic weekend away, and he didn't want to spend time with me.

In a huff, I shouted, "Why won't you ride with me!?!?"

"I'm riding a consistent 14 miles per hour," he replied.

"Ooohhhh," disappointment transmuted to delight. "I never look at my speed. I'm going for pedal, pedal, glide, pedal, throttle. I'm aiming for wind in my face and no muscle burn."

He gave it a try, laughing, then reverted to 14 mph. I continued on enjoying the wind in my hair and the power of the throttle.

We were optimizing for completely different things. Him: consistency. Me: sensory experience.

This happens ALL.THE.TIME. on teams. We miss each other and feel misunderstood or undervalued. Really, we're simply prioritizing different things but don't realize it's happening.

Some questions to make these misses visible:

1) What are you optimizing for?

2) What's your intention?

3) What really matters to you about this?

4) I feel like we're out of sync. What am I missing?

If you’d told me in high school (while I was fighting tooth and nail for a B in physics) that I’d one day be speaking to a room full of physicists at Harvard, I’d have told you that you were nuts!

But that’s exactly where I found myself last week, working with the graduate students of the Cosmic Neutrino Practicum.

Do I know the ins and outs of astroparticle physics?

Not even close. And I didn’t need to in order to connect with these brilliant minds.

We talked about communication, networking, and productivity, the skills that determine how much impact you actually have in your field, whatever that field is.

Science, art, law, doesn’t matter. The fundamentals of influence are the same. How can you effectively communicate your research or work to the average audience? How can you network in a way that is more than just surface level?

Speaking at this event was a wonderful reminder to not wait until you’re “fluent” in someone else’s world before you speak to it. Find the common ground between what you’re passionate about and what they care about. That’s where influence actually happens.

Grateful to a room full of budding scientists for reminding me why I do this work.

Burnout isn’t a one-time event.

For a lot of high performers, it’s a repeat visitor. And yes, toxic environments play a role, but if you keep landing back here, there’s more going on than your job.

After coaching numerous leaders through it, here are the four patterns I see most:

1️⃣ You’ve linked your worth to your work. Great quarter? You feel like a good person! Rough one? You feel worthless. That’s all-or-nothing thinking.

2️⃣ Perfectionism. Rereading the email for the fifth time. Redoing the report nobody asked you to redo. Over-practicing until the job takes twice as long as it needs to.

3️⃣ Self-doubt and everything that stems from it. Imposter syndrome, thought-looping, the inner monologue that never says anything useful. It’s exhausting and it’s not making you better at your job.

4️⃣ Empathy without boundaries. You feel everything. Everyone’s stress becomes your stress, and you never learned how to put it down.

None of these are personality or leadership flaws. They’re patterns, and patterns can change!

This is exactly the work I do with clients. I’m not interested in helping you “manage your calendar better,” but get to the root of why burnout keeps finding you.

"Managing my email inboxes and responses is the most stressful part of my job," my brilliant client.

Not the hard conversations. Not the high-stakes decisions. Not leading complex research. Emails.

Here's what was underneath it: She believed that showing care for others and being a field leader meant responding quickly, thoughtfully, and comprehensively.

Always. To everything.

That's all-or-nothing thinking, and it was running her into the ground.

So we unpacked it, because here's what's actually true: There are a LOT of ways to show people you care.

The memories you've built with them. How much they know you believe in their work. The opportunities you send their way. How you have their back when they're not in the room.

Email is one point of connection, it is not the whole relationship. And no one is sitting around counting the minutes until your response.

And field leadership isn't a function solely of email responsiveness and depth. It's also born of the ideas you have and how generously you share them. It lives in the questions you ask your colleagues to draw out their own work. It shows up in being willing to take a stand and grapple publicly with the cutting edge.

The reframe that changed everything: "I didn't go through X years of school to do emails."

Once she stopped treating every unread message like a personal failing or the final arbiter of her relationships and impact, her stress came down exponentially. And yes, she's actually responding to emails now!

Mindset first, always.

If something is generating way more stress than it deserves, that's not a time management problem. That's a thinking problem.

Clients experience breakthroughs like this often, and it's incredibly rewarding to watch the mental blocks unfurl. If you'd like to discover what executive coaching can look like for you, sign up for a discovery call.
