Interesting statistics

In the two weeks around Memorial Day last year, soda sold 36% more than normal. It is a known fact that soda makes up the largest percentage of sugar sweetened beverages.

Sugar sweetened beverage consumption has increased significantly over the past several decades. Recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data found that half of the U.S. population consumes at least one sugar sweetened beverage on any given day. Men consume on average 178 calories per day from sugar sweetened beverages and women consume 103 calories per day.

Of particular concern in light of the current childhood obesity epidemic is the increased use in children, especially teens and young adults. Soda often displaces more healthful items in the diet and is a warning sign of a poor quality diet.

The dangers of soda extend beyond the increase in calories, although this is likely an important contributor to weight gain and obesity. Calories consumed in liquid form do not satisfy hunger as effectively as calories consumed in solid food form, so people often consume more total calories, which can lead to weight gain.

In addition, consuming large amounts of rapidly digested sugar and high fructose corn syrup causes a spike in blood sugar and insulin, which can lead to inflammation and insulin resistance, both of which may increase your risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer.

Be conscious of what beverages you are consuming this Memorial Weekend. Try to stick with low added sugar beverages such as water, sparkling water with fruit, iced coffee, kombucha, homemade smoothie or coconut water!

[11/15/16]   This weekend I pushed myself to my limit. Saturday was a Spartan, and Sunday was a half marathon. During the half marathon, I felt great in the beginning and was running a fast pace. By mile 9 I could tell I was getting tired. It wasn't until mile 11 that I realized I was in trouble. I bonked for the first time ever. I got to mile 12 and physically had nothing left in the tank, all nutrients were depleted from my body. Thankfully with the help of the volunteers at mile 12 Tina Chirgwin and David Chirgwin, some amazing moral support and a cliff bar, then being pushed by my first client ever Schuyler Bull, I was able to finish. Pushing myself that far was something I have never experienced, and hope to never again. The body does have breaking points, and I realize I am not Superman and invincible haha

[07/22/16]   Today was my last day of my 12 week muscle building workout! WOOHOO!!
When I started, I was 191 pounds and 15% body fat, at half way I was up to 197 pounds and 12% body fat, and today I am 202 pounds at 13% body fat (due to me taking a break from my running, and kind of slacking on my meal plan lately). I am very pleased with the results that I accomplished during this time. I usually don't see the results like I do now. I completely focused my attention on building muscle and putting on size. Now it is time to refocus.

With all the races, including 2 half marathons coming up this fall, I want to be able to dominate them. the new plan is only 8 weeks, but is intense. Will I lose size, probably. But if I keep my food in check, I should be fine. I can't wait to see what the results will be on this. By the time I finish this, it will be a couple weeks out from Ragnar ADK, so perfect timing.

If you want something bad enough, only you can make that happen. Come with me on this journey!

Last August, I stepped out of a shower at work and was just offended with what I looked like. As a trainer, how could I look like that, and expect clients to listen to me? I took my body fat, and was a disgusting 28% at 230 pounds. I needed to change myself and put myself back on track. So I gave myself a goal of 12% body fat. As of this morning, I have finally hit that goal. It even surprised me! At one point, I weighed myself during this time not too long ago, and was down to 191 at 15% body fat, and everyone kept saying I looked too skinny and sick. Well now at 12% body fat, I am at 197.

Did I give up everything and go on an intense strict meal plan? Nope. Its all about moderation and self control. I will never give up Peanut Butter Cups, and I do have beer from time to time. But I did follow a meal plan that worked for me, and kept my macros in order. Did I cheat sometimes? Yes of course! But just have to get back on the wagon and keep it going. Don't stress over eating that chocolate or ice cream. Enjoy it and then focus on getting yourself back together. Everything in moderation.

I hear excuses all the time of why people can't lose weight. "Life happens", "I don't have time", etc......It is easy to lose weight, and there is one simple way to do it. You have to want to lose it. If it isn't a priority, then it won't happen. Make it a priority and it will.

Now it is time to set a new goal. #ThisIsMyYear
