Interesting statistics

In the two weeks around Memorial Day last year, soda sold 36% more than normal. It is a known fact that soda makes up the largest percentage of sugar sweetened beverages.

Sugar sweetened beverage consumption has increased significantly over the past several decades. Recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data found that half of the U.S. population consumes at least one sugar sweetened beverage on any given day. Men consume on average 178 calories per day from sugar sweetened beverages and women consume 103 calories per day.

Of particular concern in light of the current childhood obesity epidemic is the increased use in children, especially teens and young adults. Soda often displaces more healthful items in the diet and is a warning sign of a poor quality diet.

The dangers of soda extend beyond the increase in calories, although this is likely an important contributor to weight gain and obesity. Calories consumed in liquid form do not satisfy hunger as effectively as calories consumed in solid food form, so people often consume more total calories, which can lead to weight gain.

In addition, consuming large amounts of rapidly digested sugar and high fructose corn syrup causes a spike in blood sugar and insulin, which can lead to inflammation and insulin resistance, both of which may increase your risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer.

Be conscious of what beverages you are consuming this Memorial Weekend. Try to stick with low added sugar beverages such as water, sparkling water with fruit, iced coffee, kombucha, homemade smoothie or coconut water!

Did you know?!

[03/14/19]   Saw this quote from a fitness professional this morning and it made a lot of sense. Even myself have said work in progress. Enjoy and trust the process. A little brutal but hit it right:

Fitness is more of a journey than a destination, you’ll probably never reach a “finish” point but you never do in your career either.
Even if you make CEO, you’ll then CEO for an even bigger business and so on, it never ends.
I can categorically confirm 100% of you are “works in progress”, always have been, always will be. -
Yet many of you are waiting for body confidence to just arrive one day, but it won’t. Sorry mayte.
My best advice on your every day damn journey is to OWN IT. Every step of that farkin’ journey JUST OWN IT.
BECAUSE... a “work in progress” you OWN THE F**K OUT OF is so so much more flipping attractive than a “nearly finished” physique that you bloody don’t... -
Now that’s something you can implement from when you wake up tomorrow morning, eh? Don’t be a pussy.

I can’t take it any longer 🤣

Something to think about. I always think that real food is the best way to go. Keeping a calorie deficit to lose fat is the only way to do it. What would you rather have, a coffee or a real breakfast?

Are Whole Eggs Really Healthy, or Should You Just Eat Egg Whites Instead?

This is another article I really like too. My goal is to give people information to help them make choices and understand all the craziness that is out there in this industry of health and wellness. Here’s what you need to know about your favorite source of protein.

I know it has been a while since I have posted. Kind of got lost for a minute! Lots to post about and will get back to it! First one is this!

Fun Fact Friday!!!
The more weight that’s on a joint, the more stressed the joint becomes, and the more likely it will wear down and be damaged.
“Weight plays an important role in joint stress, so when people are very overweight, it puts stress on their joints, especially their weight-bearing joints, like the knees and the hips,” says Eric Matteson, MD, chair of the rheumatology division at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Every pound of excess weight exerts about 4 pounds of extra pressure on the knees. So a person who is 10 pounds overweight has 40 pounds of extra pressure on his knees; if a person is 100 pounds overweight, that is 400 pounds of extra pressure on his knees. “So if you think about all the steps you take in a day, you can see why it would lead to premature damage in weight-bearing joints,” says Dr. Matteson.
That’s why people who are overweight are at greater risk of developing arthritis in the first place. And once a person has arthritis, “the additional weight causes even more problems on already damaged joints,” says Dr. Matteson.
It's never too late to get moving and start your fitness journey!

This right here.....perfect article for today's fitness era. Times have changed. Where I live, the expense of general existence has gotten much higher than what it was when I was 18, and now there are much more innovative ways to make a living. On that note, I can list countless instances where university trained, degree bearing individuals end up as baristas...

[11/15/16]   This weekend I pushed myself to my limit. Saturday was a Spartan, and Sunday was a half marathon. During the half marathon, I felt great in the beginning and was running a fast pace. By mile 9 I could tell I was getting tired. It wasn't until mile 11 that I realized I was in trouble. I bonked for the first time ever. I got to mile 12 and physically had nothing left in the tank, all nutrients were depleted from my body. Thankfully with the help of the volunteers at mile 12 Tina Chirgwin and David Chirgwin, some amazing moral support and a cliff bar, then being pushed by my first client ever Schuyler Bull, I was able to finish. Pushing myself that far was something I have never experienced, and hope to never again. The body does have breaking points, and I realize I am not Superman and invincible haha

St. Jude Heroes

I know I haven't posted in a while. It has been quite busy!! A lot has been going on with, travelling, training and racing, and work. I gotta get back on this!! Well for one, I have been accepted to run the Chicago Marathon, and raise money for St. Jude again!!! I am very excited and would love your support! If you would like to donate to this great cause, go to and help out! It is a great cause, and having run for them before, I am glad to be helping them again! St. Jude Heroes are more than runners. They are helping find cures and save children battling cancer and other deadly disease.

[07/22/16]   Today was my last day of my 12 week muscle building workout! WOOHOO!!
When I started, I was 191 pounds and 15% body fat, at half way I was up to 197 pounds and 12% body fat, and today I am 202 pounds at 13% body fat (due to me taking a break from my running, and kind of slacking on my meal plan lately). I am very pleased with the results that I accomplished during this time. I usually don't see the results like I do now. I completely focused my attention on building muscle and putting on size. Now it is time to refocus.

With all the races, including 2 half marathons coming up this fall, I want to be able to dominate them. the new plan is only 8 weeks, but is intense. Will I lose size, probably. But if I keep my food in check, I should be fine. I can't wait to see what the results will be on this. By the time I finish this, it will be a couple weeks out from Ragnar ADK, so perfect timing.

If you want something bad enough, only you can make that happen. Come with me on this journey!

Some Quick Advice

Whoops! Finally wrote one! Being in the industry for the past 5 years, I have heard a lot, seen a lot, and learned a lot. One of my favorite hobbies is people watching, because you will never know what you will see or hear. …

Last August, I stepped out of a shower at work and was just offended with what I looked like. As a trainer, how could I look like that, and expect clients to listen to me? I took my body fat, and was a disgusting 28% at 230 pounds. I needed to change myself and put myself back on track. So I gave myself a goal of 12% body fat. As of this morning, I have finally hit that goal. It even surprised me! At one point, I weighed myself during this time not too long ago, and was down to 191 at 15% body fat, and everyone kept saying I looked too skinny and sick. Well now at 12% body fat, I am at 197.

Did I give up everything and go on an intense strict meal plan? Nope. Its all about moderation and self control. I will never give up Peanut Butter Cups, and I do have beer from time to time. But I did follow a meal plan that worked for me, and kept my macros in order. Did I cheat sometimes? Yes of course! But just have to get back on the wagon and keep it going. Don't stress over eating that chocolate or ice cream. Enjoy it and then focus on getting yourself back together. Everything in moderation.

I hear excuses all the time of why people can't lose weight. "Life happens", "I don't have time", etc......It is easy to lose weight, and there is one simple way to do it. You have to want to lose it. If it isn't a priority, then it won't happen. Make it a priority and it will.

Now it is time to set a new goal. #ThisIsMyYear
