If you won $1 billion tomorrow, what would you actually change?

Did your raise just get quietly canceled?

If your pay went up about 3% this year, inflation took it back and then took a little more.

In August, the Consumer Price Index rose 3.4% from a year earlier. Average hourly earnings rose 3.1%.

Do the math, and the average worker's inflation-adjusted hourly pay slipped about 0.2% over the year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That's the quiet trap of a traditional paycheck. You can get the raise, hit the goals, earn the review and still end the year able to buy a little less than you could the year before.

Business owners face inflation too. But they hold a lever employees don't: they can adjust pricing, add revenue streams and build equity in something they own, rather than simply spending income someone else sets.

If your raise isn't keeping up, the answer may not be a bigger raise. It may be a different relationship with your income altogether.
