When I was recovering from my shooting and my leg wouldn’t fully heal, I thought there was no way I could belly dance again. Despite the fact that I had watched my aunties and family friends dance through different abilities and stages of life, I thought that if I couldn’t dance the way I used to, I just couldn’t belly dance. I was stuck on what my body COULDN’T do anymore instead of trying to figure out what it could. It wasn’t until I saw a man who was paraplegic teaching yoga that I realized that there’s always a way to do what you love. I’m so grateful to all of the women in our community who reminded me that our practice has always been for every body…even when I was stuck in my own doubt. Sometimes you have to see it to believe it ❤️ Every dance I do can be done sitting or lying down. It just looks a little different. And each position comes with its own benefits (I highly recommend playing with as many as you can, no matter your ability!)
